Phil Lesh & The Family Band Debuts

Phil Lesh branded his Terrapin Crossroads house band Phil Lesh & The Family Band this weekend. The bassist performed with his sons Brian Lesh (guitars, vocals) and Grahame Lesh (guitars, vocals) as well as Ross James (pedal steel, guitars, vocals) and Scott Padden (drums) in the club’s bar space on Saturday night. While Lesh has performed with these musicians many times since he opened the club, this is the first time he performed under the Phil Lesh & The Family Band name.
Like many of the show she plays with his sons, Lesh dug into Ryan Adams’ catalog, offering the singer/guitarist’s “A Kiss Before I Go” and his Whiskeytown number “Drank Like a River.” The ensemble also nodded to another musical family with Justin Townes Earle’s “Harlem River Blues” and his father Steve Earle’s “Drank Like a River.” As a nod to Hurricane Sandy, the evening’s setlist had a water focused theme, including a new weather-related song by “Grahame Lesh.”
Then, Phil Lesh & The Family Band returned to Terrapin Crossroads for a brunch show on Sunday.
