Levon Helm Laid To Rest; Rambles To Honor His Legacy

A view of the procession via Helm’s Facebook page

Levon Helm was laid to rest by an assortment of musicians, close friends and family on Friday. The Band drummer was buried in Woodstock Cemetery next to his close friend and bandmate Rick Danko, who died in 1999. While his service was private, Helm was sent off with a police escort through the town’s New Orleans-style second-line parade. Some of Helm’s closest musical collaborators—including his final band leader Larry Campbell, trumpet player Steven Bernstein, Conan/Fab Faux guitarist Jimmy Vivino, drummer Steve Jordan and members of Helm’s Midnight Ramble Band—participated performed during the procession, which included the New Jersey’s the Jaguar Memorial Band. Campbell—who was one of Helm’s closest collaborators during his final years—also served as pallbearer. According to the local paper the Daily Freeman, over 2,000 people also paid tribute to Helm during a public wake on Thursday.

Message on Helm’s Facebook page and a note from his studio manager Barbara O’ Brien indicate that his Rambles will continue as a tribute to his legacy.
