I saw the film at Telluride. No doubt the film is made with extreme artstiry, and Bardem gives a thoughtful and moving performance. At the end of the day, though, the film is in fact deeply depressing, and lots of people walked away form the film left simply with the feeling that life sucks and not much more. One hopes in films like these, to learn something about the human condition, that there is some silver lining, something learned or revealed that makes the suffering worthwhile. In this case, unfortunately, many in the audience, myself included, didn’t find it.
