Dave Matthews Band, Jack White, Skrillex, String Cheese Incident, Wilco, Dispatch, Steve Winwood, The Flaming Lips, Chris Cornell, STS9 and Michael Franti & Spearhead are among the acts slated to appear at the third-annual Hangout Music Fest. Recently named Pollstar’s “Best Festival of the Year,” The Hangout will return to the sandy beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama from May 18-20.
Dave Matthews Band and Jack White—the latter of whom announced his appearance at the festival late last week—will each headline a day of The Hangout while Skrillex will anchor the festival’s dance tent. A third main stage headliner will be confirmed in the coming weeks. The Hangout will also boast performances by several recently re-activated bands, including Dispatch and The String Cheese Incident as well as Dave Matthews Band’s first confirmed appearance of the year.
Other act slated to appear include: Gogol Bordello, Flogging Molly, Paul Oakenfold, G. Love and Special Sauce, Randy Newman, Dr. Dog, Dawes, M Ward, Coheed & Cambria, Yelawolf, Switchfoot, Julian Marley, Cage the Elephant, Zed’s Dead, Mavis Staples, Sphongle, Young the Giant, Alabama Shakes, Gary Clark Jr, The Devil Makes Three, Paper Diamond, Futurebirds and Rebelution. The Flaming Lips are expected to perform Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety during their marquee set.
According to the festival’s promoters, The 2012 Hangout will cap this year’s attendance at 35,000 attendees per day, but add a considerable amount of new space to the festival’s grounds. The Hangout will offer a Hammock Beach—a shaded area with art installations—and the Sky-bar tower—which offers offering 360-degree views of the festival—as well as amusement rides, water stations with free refills for all guests, live comedy and a family-friendly kids’ stage at The Hangout club.
In addition, the Fest has teamed up with ReverbNation for the “2012 Hang Loose Band Competition” to find one more band for the event. The winner will perform at the festival, and receive three-day passes to enjoy the whole experience. Competition submissions and rules can be found on the festival’s homepage.
Additional acts will be confirmed in the coming weeks. For a look at the Hangout’s previous years, be sure to visit our video section for a slew of performances recorded at last year’s gathering.
