Since I was under 3 years old when we moved to the suburbs from 1022 Minnesota Avenue, I must rropet mostly borrowed memories about the Granada. My sisters tell me they were allowed to come across the street to the theater and spend an entire day for pennies watching movies and eating treats. My parents felt confident that they were safe, in spite of the homeless drunks they could see from their bedroom window at night as they used the alley as a place to relieve themselves. Later, when I was a young teen, the Granada showed a series of horror movies; two to three in a row. My brother and I, years younger than my sisters, were now the delighted attendees of shows such as “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and other Edgar Allen Poe stories brought to life on the screen. These are indeed fond memories of a beautiful theater.
