The Grateful Dead Pass The Torch: Dave’s Picks

Shortly after announcing the end of the “Road Trips” series, Dead.net has officially confirmed another Grateful Dead archival series. Named after current Dead archivist Dave Lemieux and a clear reference to the “Road Trips” predecessor “Dick’s Picks,” (which featured selections of Lemieux’s predecessor the late Dick Latvala) “Dave’s Picks” will include “some of the finest unreleased shows from the vaults, mastered to HDCD specs and packaged with rare photos and insightful liner notes.” Dead.net plans to release four “Dave’s Picks” CD releases in 2012, beginning with the Dead’s May 25, 1977 show at Richmond, VA’s The Mosque. All four 2012 “Dave’s Picks” releases will be limited to 12,000 individually numbered copies. A special subscription package for all four 2012 Dave’s Picks releases is now available online.

Oh great, this guy will have nothing but similar ’77 and ’78 shows being released, and late ’80s/‘90s. Just what we need another bertha-good lovin, samson, 18 minute plodding NFA from a 77 or 78 show.

He’s no Dick, this guy Dave. at least latvala understood what the happening eras where. This guy dave actually thinks ’78 was epic.

If I wanted to hear more 1977 shows I would simply listen to the Sirius Grateful Dead Channel. :-(

Who needs a 30 minute free form jazz-esque exploration on a ’73 or ’74 Dark Star when Dave can give us Keith banging the same 2 chords over and over on an 18 minute Down-tempo Not fade away in 1977.

For the grumbles above regarding 78 era Dead, check out Dick’s Picks 18; I really hope one of the releases from Dave is a 78 show! Another unique peak year.

If you don’t want another ’77 show, don’t buy it. I have listened to the Mosque show a bunch of times, and its pretty awesome. If you can’t appreciate the work the guys were doing during ’77, you probably shouldn’t be listening to the Grateful Dead.
