A Lobster Sidelines My Morning Jacket’s Patrick Hallahan
My Morning Jacket drummer Patrick Hallahan sat out his band’s performance at Bangor, ME’s KahBang festival on Saturday night after having an allergic reaction to some lobster. Hallahan broke the news via Twitter, stating “My apologies for not being able to play tonight…first show I’ve ever missed.” Hallahan—who has been friends with MMJ frontman Jim James since the 4th grade—officially joined the band in 2002. The rest of MMJ rallied and performed without drums on Saturday night (a clip of the band performing with their stuffed bear pet in his place can be see above). Though the band used their electric instruments at times, the show focused on the group’s mellow and acoustic-flavored songs). In another tweet, bassist Two-Tone Tommy said, “Playing without Patrick last nite I felt like a kitten who realized his friend didn’t come home from the vet.”
The show opened with the band’s first take on “Tonight I Want To Celebrate With You” since the band’s run at New York’s Terminal 5 last October and also included the band’s first takes on the acoustic favorites “I Will Be There When You Die” and “Bermuda Highway” since late 2010. Hallahan rejoined his band the following night at Boston’s Bank of America Pavilion. The band reverted back to its normal setlist and, for the third time this tour, brought out opening act Neko Case to sing on “Islands In The Stream.” MMJ and Neko Case will perform at Detroit, MI’s Meadow Brook tomorrow.
