Foster the People and The Decemberists Talk Outside Lands

San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival officially kicks off today in Golden Gate Park. The festival—now in its fourth year—will feature performances from headliners Phish, MGMT, Arcade Fire and Muse as well as art, food and wine events over the course of the weekend. On a recent press call, two of the festival’s performers—Mark Foster of Foster the People and Decemberists bassist Nate Query—chatted with journalists about their plans for the festival, bands they are excited to see and even some potential collaborations.

Foster admitted “You know, I’ve never owned a Phish record but I’ve always heard amazing things about their shows. So I’m looking forward to seeing them for sure. I think it’s amazing, you know, the musicians shift when a band goes up and they never play the same set twice—they just kind of breathe their instruments.” Foster the People may also cover Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So,” a song Foster says Rivers Cuomo taught him at a party when he was only 18. Foster added the song to his band’s repertoire after Weezer started covering Foster the People’s hit single, “Pumped Up Kicks”

The Decemberists bassist, who admitted to once playing in a jamband of his own, discussed some of the weekend’s potential sit ins. “We could very do something with Mavis again. She’s always up for it. And then we’re playing right before Arcade Fire. You know, maybe we’ll have a few extra drummers on a song or something.”

The festival gates open at 11AM PDT today and the music begins one hour later. The complete schedule is available at the Outside Lands website.

Hi Dominic,I came across your blg mnthos ago but haven’t been a regular reader. I’m impressed by what you have accomplished in a few mnthos. The Site Map plugin is especially impressive. Not only becuase of the obvious SEO advantages, but becuase every other Category/Archive scheme expects a user coming back to know when an article was published, or what obscure category the blogger thought to put it in which is, blogosphere-wide a very dumb thing. Thanks for making things simple. You mentioned being outside the US care to mention where you are based? I’m an American living full-time in the Philippines love living here but hate the crumby Internet service/speed. Anyway. press on guy, I’ve added you to my feedreader now.

Did you see Wilco last time they played? It felt like 45 mitnues of the same chord being played over and over. I swear they only did one song and it last the whole time. The big news is Robert Randolph AND Buddy Guy in the same day! John Friggin Prine! Jimmy Cliff is going to force me to roll a fattie and go back to the go old days when you could still spark one at an Austin Concert. Franz Ferdinand was outstanding last year but the ACL set they did was nothing compared to them stopping at Amy’s Ice cream and firing up an impromptu set. Also if there are any Yankees headed this way for the show a definite must see is Grupo Fantasma. But alas wife is going to be one week away from child birth. Also I can pick up discount tickets from my office so if anyone wants some cheap tickets let me know. $85 for a 3 day pass
