Thanksgiving with Del McCoury and Family

Relix’s Cold Turkey has featured the music of Del McCoury Band each Thanksgiving weekend since 2005. This year’s Cold Turkey Thanksgiving special finds the McCoury Family collaborating with two very different—but distinctively American—groups.

The first four songs of this year’s Thanksgiving episode are from a previously unreleased collaboration between with New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The members of Del McCoury Band recorded the tracks in San Francisco with the classic jazz band.

The final three songs from this week’s episode are drawn from The Travelin’ McCourys’ recent collaborative EP with rising gospel stars The Lee Boys, Meetin’ In The Middle. As the McCoury’s explain, “And while their profile is not yet as high as the McCourys, the Lee Boys are, like them, second-generation masters of an authentic tradition—in their case, the astonishing, heartfelt ‘sacred steel’ style that embeds virtuoso pedal steel guitar playing in the heart of African-American gospel sounds.”

Of course, we’d also stuffed a few classic Del McCoury Band cuts in-between these collaborative performance. Please click here to listen to this year’s special.
