The Village Voice Reports on the Nitrous Mafia

This week’s cover story of the alternative newsweekly The Village Voice features an investigative report on nitrous use at summer festivals and jamband concerts. The article discusses the use of nitrous at events like Bonnaroo, All Good and Gathering of the Vibes, the legal ramifications of selling nitrous and the rise of the Nitrous Mafia. Several members of the jamband community are quoted in the article, including singer/radio personality David Gans, Tea Leaf Green guitarist Josh Clark, Umphrey’s McGee tour manager Don Richards, Royal Potato Family publicist Kevin Calabro, longtime Disco Biscuits security guard Marshall Rodriguez and organizers of Gathering of the Vibes.

“During festival season, the Boston and Philadelphia crews band together, operating in higher numbers, assisted by a recruited class of lower-level minions who aren’t card-carrying members of the Nitrous Mafia but are eager to make a summer buck,” the article says. “They’re often ex-cons.”

The article is available for free online.
