Johnny Irion “Old Man Trump”

In 1950, Woody Guthrie moved with his family into the Beach Haven apartment complex in Brooklyn. He would soon write: “My worst enemy is my landlord that tries his best to make me and my family live a life of race hate just because he is so sickly, he chose to live his own sad life that way.” His landlord’s name was Fred Trump, father of Donald Trump. For the first time, in partnership with the Guthrie family, these recently discovered lyrics were set to music by California rock band U.S. Elevator. Here, frontman Johnny Irion (who is married to Woody’s granddaughter, Sarah Lee Guthrie) performs an acoustic rendition of “Old Man Trump” with Brian Stollery of the Brooklyn Americana group Bad Faces.
