Seven Cheesy Jamband Lyrics

As much as we love them, we all know the focus of jambands is often the musicianship expense and, well, the jams. As a result, at times, lyrics occasionally are given short shrift. What follows are a few examples of moments as of late where we’ve found ourselves singing along, only to step back and ask, “Wait, what did I just say?” Please feel free to add your selections below.

1. “Gotta Jibboo” – Phish

“Mama sing sing when she gotta jibboo/Papa sing gotta jibboo too”

This one debuted with Trey’s solo project, with no assistance from steady Phish lyricist Tom Marshall. While it can be a huge jam vehicle, this nonsensical Phish tune is sung over two basic chords and can be a challenge to comprehend.

2. “Mirrors” – The Disco Biscuits

“And in your dreams I have a chance to see/A glimpse of future life with you and me”

“Mirrors” originally was a new favorite amongst Disco Biscuits fans but took a turn for the worse when a video of the song being performed at the Red Rocks Amphitheater surfaced and made the rounds on Phantasy Tour. The video featured a tacky arrangement of backup dancers which didn’t help with the schmaltzy sentiment.

3. “Partyin’ Peeps” – Umphrey’s McGee

“A beer bong set you straight/My stomach’s so irate/B-linin’ for the toilet”

Even Umphrey’s McGee isn’t taking itself seriously on this one (which admittedly redeems this one for some folks). This song is clearly mocking the partying scene, while simultaneously acknowledging the group’s sometimes-fratty listeners. While amusing, it’s a bit too graphic and direct, in characterizing some of the substances that can go into your body – and come right back out.

4. “Spine of a Dog” – moe.

“You say potato and I say three / I am a pinball machine. / I can’t tell the difference between /my bellybutton or navel / ping pong, pool cue, or a foosball table”

In the classic goofy vein of moe., this fan favorite has become a sing-along and crowd favorite. While what is being chanted may makes little sense, it does typically lead to a fun and energetic jam.

5. “Like a Buddha” – Railroad Earth

“The boat is floating in your mind, although these words are talking”

Railroad Earth works to paint a surreal fantasy world in this song, but fails to send a coherent message, leaving the audience singing along to seeming nonsense. But, then again, isn’t that surrealism?

6. “Princess Henrietta” – God Street Wine

“Candy apples and peppermints / I’m going to be your little prince”

This song speaks of a prince’s quest for a princess but sometimes takes the metaphor a little too seriously, alluding to the childhood game. Candyland, perhaps?

7. “Welcome to the Dance” – Furthur

“Life is strange/Rich and strange/Welcome to the dance”

As the surviving members of the Grateful Dead grower old, their original lyrics often focus on the full sweep of life’s journey. However this one is a bit too on the nose, particularly when compared with their classic compositions of the past.
