PJ15: Pearl Jam Family Tree

The countdown is now underway until the September 20 release of PJ20. This documentary film directed by Cameron Crowe chronicles Pearl Jam’s two decades of music. The film will screen nationwide on the evening of the 20th (and then a limited number of theatres will offer a one week run, starting on September 23). A PJ20 soundtrack and book also will be released on September 20, and to celebrate all of this, various sites have debuted special Pearl Jam content over the past 14 days.

Today, Relix joins in the action, sharing a look at the official Pearl Jam Family Tree (you can click on the image to enlarge it).

Click here to revisit our August 2006 cover story on the group.

The PJ20 soundtrack is available for pre-order at Amazon and iTunes

I love Pearl Jam, favorite band of all time, but you’re not showing some key specifics for Pearl Jam that are associated with that you are probably well aware of but i’m going to point out nonetheless. Matt Cameron wasn’t the drummer for PJ until Binaural and a couple drummers before him were in the group, most notable being Jack Irons, who recorded and toured with them for Yield and No Code. Although I like this concept, just not as cool without Jack on there.

Ed September 15, 2011, 15:23:35

No Boom in Pearl Jam?

bertan September 15, 2011, 15:38:05

Please give Dave Abbruzzese the credit he deserves.

Paul September 15, 2011, 16:18:35

The fact that Dave Krusen, Dave Abbruzzese and Jack Irons get no mentions here reduces this family tree to bullshit.

Jj September 15, 2011, 16:37:04

Boom? Where’s Boom?

PearlDrum September 15, 2011, 16:47:35

A graphic named “The Pearl Jam Lineage” is total b.s. without Krusen, Abbruzzese, and Irons’ contributions noted. Also, official or not, nobody would complain if BOOOOOOOM got some love on this graph.

dnarocks September 15, 2011, 17:28:56

To be totally correct, also missing are other past members from BRAD, also Mad Season used Mark Lanegan for some tracks, and as replacement singer until the Bass player passed away, after Layne Staley. Again as above comments suggest.. recognise the drummers. Dave Krusen, Matt Chamberlain, Dave A and Jack Irons, though he totally lost it trying to fill Dave A shoes. Hopefully they all get some recognition in the film. they are all a part of it. Dave A made the sound what it was in the begining!

Kids, Matt was technically the “1st” PJ drummer, though not permanent or full time at that point, he played on the demo tape sent to Eddie. It appears they are only focusing on the current & ‘official’ members of the group… just my guess. I do agree they should have listed all the PJ drummers chronologically though, and added Boom in as well.

brendan September 15, 2011, 22:58:33

yeah, where is boom? and what about mookie blaylock?

Rick September 16, 2011, 00:36:07

The graph would then get huge and unruly, with Candlebox and the RHCP and stuff. Freakin cool, but unruly.

Goran September 16, 2011, 03:29:46

Dave Abbruzzese gave his signature to the album “Ten” which is to this day honestly the best thing these guys ever made…. And he’s not even mentioned? Not fair!

Glenn September 16, 2011, 05:28:30

This is a once in a lifetime arrangement (band) The greatest story tellers in music of all time. The Rock and Roll hall of fame would only be a token to the recognition of their music. G.C.

jamminonthe1 September 16, 2011, 06:08:42

Also note that in the albums list they left Matt Cameron off of Temple of the Dog. Seriously?

Ben Sliver September 16, 2011, 07:32:27

A more complete family tree here (except it was done before the mighty Boom, so Boom is missing) :

Chris Bailey September 16, 2011, 12:27:47

I think that Boom is also not an official member of the group, but a touring musician. I also agree with all of the comments above, a chart like this should be complete, no matter how unruly and complex it becomes. Also missing MACC from the Hendrix Tribute compilation.

jamminonthe1 September 16, 2011, 13:36:05

Don’t necessarily agree about MACC because they can’t put every artist that the guys did one or two songs with. Neil Young should be on this because they did a full album with him. They also don’t include solo albums (Jeff, Ed). I also don’t know how they would really incorporate Boom on this, but any official band members should be included.

Vishnu September 16, 2011, 16:56:23

The tree is incomplete without Dave Abbruzzese, Dave Krusen, Jack Irons and Booom…. Please Change it.. Else it pretty crazy..

Sven September 16, 2011, 17:05:18

Nice try, but unacceptably incomplete. Pearl Jam should remove the link for the PJ Twenty Countdown page.

Pontikas September 16, 2011, 19:24:16

Hey Goran, Dave Abbruzzese did not play on Ten !

Mrshock13 September 17, 2011, 11:29:23

Dave Abbruzzese gave his signature to the album “Ten” which is to this day honestly the best thing these guys ever made…. And he’s not even mentioned? Not fair! @Goran…um…Dave Krusen played on “Ten”. Abbruzzese was on vitalogy and vs.

Thobald September 17, 2011, 15:02:08

Also missing “Into the Wild” soundtrack on the Eddie Vedder line, I’d say…

Rob September 17, 2011, 15:46:59

Copied this from Paul and agree, this tree is bulls**t wheres Dave Krusen, Dave Abbruzzese and Jack Irons?

tibbyjohn September 18, 2011, 11:09:54

No Dave Krusen? No Dave Abbruzzese? No Jack Irons? No Boom Gaspar? No mention of me either??

Redlamp8 September 18, 2011, 20:55:41

Guys… chill out! This is not a “History of Pearl Jam” tree – this is a history of the current members of Pearl Jam tree. It shows where Eddie, Stone, Mike, Jeff, and Matt have been throughout their careers.

nothingman September 18, 2011, 22:17:55

@Redlamp8
then why at the bottom where it says albums they have been on it has Matt Cameron on every album??

Mike Pineda September 19, 2011, 18:04:35

It is the current band now, and how they want to be seen everybody!!! Let them see how they want to be seen. Let all the animosity lay by the way side. I am sure they have been taken care of. We all know as PJ fans, who used to be in PJ!!! Because we are still here, expecting something more! Enjoy the show!!!

Muz September 19, 2011, 19:42:42

I like Lamp.

alex September 28, 2011, 19:40:30

yes. ive analyzed the history in text but having this visual really makes my life easier.

Stew October 5, 2011, 00:51:23
