Live Blog: Umphrey’s McGee’s Stew Art Series Event at Brooklyn Bowl

Stay tuned (and be sure to hit refresh) as Relix’s Sam Davis blogs live from Umphrey’s McGee’s Stew Art Series event at Brooklyn Bowl…

4:46 Band takes the stage

Theme 1: “Moogasaurus Rex”

Jake and Ryan crouching, toying with effects pedals.

Synth-led, proggy jam.

Theme 2: Dark and EVIL dance party

Theme 3: Industrial jam

Drum heavy metal direction taking over

Theme 4: Soaring uplifting reprise

Melodious, organic builds. Jake shredding atop.

Theme 5: Heavy metal uplifting rock

Charging jam. Signalling changes. Liquid transitions between sections.

Theme 6: Disco Trance

Beat picks up, synthy effects enter. Band is nailing the “themes.” Full on electro-jam now.

Within each theme, several “inner-themes” are explored. “Disco” jam has now entered a 3rd section with a new melody.

Segment one is over. Q&A has begun.

Bayliss notes “Wife Soup” as the first song the band wrote together with the complete lineup.

Bayliss also notes that, when he was young, he “wanted to be John Lennon” when he grew up.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Second improv section begins.

Theme 1: Brian Eno Ambient

Spacey, layered psych jam.

Theme 2: Slap that bass

Stasik slappin’ da bass over a chunky, syncopated groove.

Theme 3: Dueling guitar ragefest

Theme 4: ZAPPAAAAAA!!!!!

Willie the Pimp. Jake on vox.

Theme 5: Melodic drum and bass

Fast paced drum beat with ambient layers atop.

Theme 6: Myers does Goodfellas

Layla outro with Myers giving his best Italian mobster impression. “Whatsa matta wit chu?”

Theme 7: Heavy Metal Glory

Megadeath style intro. Song in double time with pounding drum line. Jake shreds…

Theme 8: Trade instruments

Bayliss on bass, Ryan on synth, Myers on guitar, Jake on drums, Joel on percussion, Andy on keys.

Kris will now show us the “drum fill that never ends.” Band sings “it’s the fill that never ends” in falsetto.

Q&A segment

First Jimmy Stewart took place 10 years ago today at Jeremy Welsh’s wedding.

Band comments on being added to the ATO roster. Bayliss says the new label can help them get in front of a new group of listeners.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Third improv section begins

Theme 1: Funky Porn Groove

Theme 2: The Honeymoon Suite (sex on the beach)

electro drum-led groove.

Theme 3: Get Floydy weird jam

Jake lays down some signature Gilmour lines. Very reminiscent of Time intro.

Theme 4: Percussion rage.

Theme 5: Dirty organ jam

Sounds like Garth Hudson.

Theme 6: Jake’s favorite song

Solo Randy Rhodes piece.

Theme 7: Favorite pedal

Psych-jam.

Theme 8: Robitic facemelt

/End S2 event.
