Phish at The Greek Night Two

Rock band that jams? Or jam band that rocks?! I’m still divided, but after the second night of Phish at the Greek I’m gonna go with the former, or latter? If second set’s “Rock & Roll” opener or encore of “Good Times, Bad Times” (both choice and rocking covers) give any insight into the direction the band is heading, well, bring on the rock show. Even first set’s closer, “Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan” was unleashed in a prime coveted set closing spot. All of these hints—the subtle clues in the song selections and bands that Phish cover—must mean something?

Someone call the Double Rainbow guy and ask him “What does it mean?”

Don’t discount first set and the prominent dance party jams. Take “The Moma Dance” with it’s fluid incredible vibe. And yet another cover, The Talking Heads’ “Cities” which saw every body in the Greek busting a move—just like those in ancient Greece. These jams, moments when the band could lock in and let the music move them (instead of vice versa) only took speed after “Ghost” and after a slight hiccup starting “Mike’s Song.” I’m always good for a Mike’s>Simple (despite some creative switching of lyrics) and when “Weekapaug” finally came around a few songs later in the set we were all back matching the band that can move.

Moma Dance had everyone getting down

So, which did you think I meant? Rock or jam band? Phish covering “Good Times, Bad Times” is as close as I’ll ever get to hearing live Led Zeppelin (one of the mightiest rock bands ever). Maybe we’ll get another clue tonight at the jam rock show, or show rock jam? OR maybe we’ll get that Prep School Hippie?

Check out Scott Bernstein’s audience recording from last night’s show.

I dig the videos and reviews on your site about different jamb bands and things of the such. nice post. keep it up. Thanks. IStillGotMyGuitar

I’m sorry, but this is an uninteresting and relatively thoughtless take on these important shows and the development of the band’s playing since the “return.” Try harder please. “Rock band that jams, or jam band that rocks?” C’mon! THis comes off as an incredibly naive take on this band.

Souppy Sales August 13, 2010, 12:57:54

Completely agree ^. Waste of my morning commute time.

Hood August 13, 2010, 13:12:40

I agree with both posts above. Seems like Relix wanted a token Phish story. This article does not do justice to the set of Greek shows. Poor poor effort.

greg August 13, 2010, 13:29:51

Seriously? This was the “in the trenches” story teased from the Relix email? I thought I was going to read a great review of the Greek shows but instead it was absolute fluff. Seems like the author searched for Phish buzz words, threw in a few song titles, talked more about Zep than Phish, then just quit writing. Boo.

Neehan August 13, 2010, 13:49:03

This is a bunch of crap, what a shity read. They have been playing the songs metioned for a very long time, Im embarssed that relix would approve this script, well maybe thats why I dropped my subscription a few years back

Ricky Gervais August 13, 2010, 14:13:33

What an awful read. Demonstrates no understanding of the rich culture surrounding this incredible incredible band and all the people whose lives they have changed over the last 25 years. Nice try, but seriously, this approaches disrespectful. Who would approve this? ZERO credibility

Robert Gale August 13, 2010, 14:14:15

Hey Relix, I’m available for part time writing of Phish show reviews. This article sucks. I’ll try to do better. Relix will be a Relic soon, with this type of coverage.

JML August 13, 2010, 14:22:13

This was written by a girl at her 3rd show. they have done those covers for over a decade now- hahahaha. cmonnn

Woody August 13, 2010, 14:22:19

Read it again – really.
I think it’s someone’s high school paper!

Steven August 13, 2010, 14:26:41

I was there and anyone could have drawn these elementary conclusions by staying home and checking the setlists online… Nice shitty video too…maybe link to the phish video website with pro camera work and excellent sound?

JED22 August 13, 2010, 14:42:10

I agree with every comment here I hope that it is heard loud and clear by Relix-Please get a better writing staff.

Lycanthropist August 13, 2010, 14:51:26

wait, this band doesn’t sound like Dave Matthews. seriously though. this is pretty much some uninspired drivel.

Buitrefax August 13, 2010, 14:57:15

Written for noobs by a noob? Why hasn’t this blog post been deleted yet?

Pete August 13, 2010, 15:00:36

Come on Relix, you can do better than this…. I can’t believe you sent an email to me (and a ton of others) touting this article, in the subject header no less. I hope you’re not planning on reprinting this in your next issue.

Jonathan booth August 13, 2010, 15:13:29

Mr. Miner would not approve…. phishthoughts.com is where the real trench’s!

Mike Winikoff August 13, 2010, 15:14:09

Hate to beat a dead horse, like the BLM has been doing all summer, but these comments are right on – this article is awful and not worthy of Relix. You guys made your mark with insightful writing – this goes in the opposite direction. I was listening to these shows via stream and could have conveyed what was going on at the Greek much better. I learned nothing from this story – not even any insight into the writer. Go read one of Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts posts to see how a Phish review that conveys something of substance.

golgiiguy August 13, 2010, 15:22:22

this is a joke right? talk about phoning it in. Seems like this person wrote this review from looking at the setlist and watching a few youtube videos. LAME

scott August 13, 2010, 15:38:27

Whats up with the light show??? I’ve been to c class shows with better lights? Trey you got any more heroin???

Mikesgroover August 13, 2010, 16:17:16

A great show that deserves a much-better written assessment than this piece of drivel. I clicked over from the e-mail tease as well, and this is what you put up? Your readership deserves better.

flarrdogg August 13, 2010, 16:40:54

Remember when Relix used to be an insightful, thought- provoking magazine? Me neither. Amazing that this is the “review” for Greek II.

JamGuy August 13, 2010, 16:49:32

That is about as pedestrian a review as you will ever find – i know spun out wooks who could have come up with something more insightful. Very disappointed in relix

joe August 13, 2010, 17:00:53

LOFL @ this garbage! This is literally the WORST article I think I’ve EVER read on any site/publication. I really don’t think the author has a clue as to what she is even speaking about. Actually, I KNOW she doesn’t have a clue what she is talking about. I’m assuming she did this for free, but not at the expense of making your publication look like “Highlights” from grade school. Get rid of this garbage, Relix!

Bumjammed August 13, 2010, 17:11:25

What is this blather? If i had to compare the above show review to a cocktail, it would be a warm watered down piss martini in a recycled seven/eleven cup. Relix should think about getting pros to write these pieces and avoid letting some wombat spew forth such drivel. This droid was obviously staring into the lights, gyrating aimlessly and crankin’ maaaaly instead thinking about putting together an informative and insightful piece on a band whos work (past present and future) deserves better.

Denny August 13, 2010, 17:21:54

Lame reporting folks. I think your reporter got loose and

Ben Hamelin August 13, 2010, 17:43:18

“Relix goes into the trenches?” What exactly does this mean? I’ve had more fun reading these comments. That wasn’t an article at all. Not sure what the point even was. That being said, I will disagree with the phishthoughts.com supporters here, and let me explain why. I was faithfully reading his blog until he got on the “Trey’s ending jams” kick. I just got sick of the nit-picking, when all I was hearing was brilliant inspired playing by this amazing band. I realize some criticism is ok, and that everyone’s sense of an overall show is unique, but it got to the point where I felt like he was using his blog to muster up frustration at the band, and many were starting to echo his “thoughts.” SO, I’ve stopped reading his blog and now read the MOSTLY respectful feedbck on phish.net. My 2 cents….

S Kwan Dohlas August 13, 2010, 18:24:02

I was intrigued by the teaser for this article in the Relix e-mail. And can’t believe just how atrocious this “review” is. “Down in the trenches?” What a freaking joke! This is a shamefully inadequate review … as the self-proclaimed leading jamband media outlet, I expect Relix to play their A game when covering high demand, high interest shows from the world’s top jamband. Crappy blogs are a dime a dozen, and this is just one of thousands of poorly written Phish reviews. But I’m generally not e-mailed links to crappy blogs. My friends know better than to send out useless links. But Relix LEADS with this garbage in their e-mail blast. BUH BYE Relix. Thanks to THIS BLOG I am unsubscribing from all Relix e-mail lists.

myg August 13, 2010, 18:28:20

Now I remember why I stopped subscribing to Relix. Thanks for the reminder. This article is the pits.

Lets Pylon August 13, 2010, 19:41:29

“Even first set’s closer, “Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan” was unleashed in a prime coveted set closing spot.” WTF does that mean? “Prime coveted set closing spot”?!? So like backstage there’s a little room where we’ll find Character Zero, Sample, Antelope and a bunch of new songs all saying “Oooh ooh ooooh I want to close the first set! I want to close the first set! I so COVET that set closing position!!!” ENGLISH MOTHERFUNKER, DO YOU SPEAK IT?!? Moma Dance’s “fluid, incredible vibe”. WTF does that mean?!? And the ancient Greeks are known for “busing a move”?!? First I’ve heard of it. This is what passes these days as a LEAD STORY from Relix. Sad, but not unexpected.

John August 13, 2010, 20:56:11

The Simple, arguably one of the most engaging pieces of music the band has put out since their return, is hardly even mentioned. Step up your game Relix!!

landa321 August 14, 2010, 04:46:51

Awesome review!!! Please post more!

JediMaster August 16, 2010, 05:58:40

bwahahahahaa

Music Phan August 16, 2010, 16:07:38

I mean, OMG!!! I went to the Phish rock concert & OMG! At first I was nervous cuz like I don’t look good in tie-dye & I get scared by some of the people there, but like it was totally awesome! Like, they did a Led Zeppelin song & I love that song & it was like better than seeing Led Zeppelin! Like the singer in Phish sounded just like the singer in Zeppelin! My advice: If you can’t see Led Zeppelin then this concert was the next best thing or better. They even played the Talking Heads!!! I love the singer in the Talking Heads video, he’s so weird LOL!!! The guitarist in Phish was getting really into it and like he played really longs solos sometimes which was cool because it gave me time to go to the bathroom & redo my makeup that kept coming off cuz I was so hot. They really need to put air conditioners at these concert halls LOL!!! But OMG – Phish rocks! I bought one of their CD’s cuz the guy at the counter said it was the best one. I’m gonna go back to another Phish concert next summer too for sure!!! But OMG, I get to write a review about this one for Relix magazine which is like a magazine that my parents read back in the 90’s LOL!!!! Like anyway…. O-M-G!!! I’m like the biggest Phish fan in the world now!!!! They jam AND rock. That is just like SO awesome. OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!! xoxoxoxo

Bearito August 17, 2010, 10:55:01

What can I say that has not already been said? Oh yeah, this article reeks worse than my nutz do. Who the hell is running this magazine anyway? Relix used to give a sh*t about everything that went into it’s publications. Just because you have tapped into the internet doesn’t mean you can just pump out this disposable garbage. Leave that to Rolling Stone.

Scott Bernstein September 17, 2010, 08:41:23

Please stop being so harsh with your comments on my article. I tried my best, but since it was my first Phish show, I had trouble writing a decent review. Relix gave me a backstage pass- that’s why I was considered “in the trenches”. However, the band wouldn’t let me include anything from my time spent backstage. Also, the UC Berkeley campus was rad, and I’m thinking of applying there for college next year, even though I would never get in. Keeping my fingers crossed that Phish (the bestest rock jam band ever!) comes back to the Greek Theatre in the spring- so I could do a follow-up story and make twenty more dollars from Relix. This way I won’t have to be giving the two dudes next to me the ski poles at my next show for a quick buck.
