Doctor’s Orders: What’s Your Favorite Music Book?

To commemorate the 40th year of Relix, we’re running a series of Relix 40 lists in the magazine and online that cover a variety of topics. So far we’ve recommended 40 novels with music themes as well as 40 entertaining and enlightening memoirs. With the long weekend approaching it’s time for many of us to curl up with a fine book. What do you suggest? Please tell us below. We’ll run some of your responses in the next issue of Relix.

My favorite is probably Dennis McNally’s biography of the Grateful Dead. I knew some of the story but he filled in so much more.

I second the suggestion of Long Strange Trip by Dennis McNally but I also enjoy Blair Jackson’s Garcia: An American Life

This one is dated but back in the day I learned so much about Phish from Dean Budnick’s book.

Agreed although The Phish Companion is the go-to book these days.

Speaking of Dean though (and these are his Orders after all) I will say that I learned so much about ticketing and the concert industry from Ticket Masters, his book with fellow Relix editor Josh Baron

I second that. We read the book in a class I took on the concert industry. Another favorite of mine is the book pictured above: The Mansion On The Hill by Fred Goodman

The best autobiography is Miles by Miles Davis. You can hear his deep growling voice coming through the pages when you read it. He never backed down to anything and lived life on his own terms. Miles was punk before punk rock existed.
