Doctor’s Orders: Share Your Favorite Phil & Friends Memory

Phil Lesh, Phil & Friends, Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, CA, 02/12/05- photo by Mike Sherry

Phil Lesh will return to the stage next week with another incarnation of his Phil and Friends group. Please share your favorite memory associated with past performances of P & F, whether it be of the classic quintet (Lesh, Haynes, Herring, Barraco and Molo) or some other lineup. We’ll share some of your accounts in the next issue of Relix. Oh yes and if you haven’t seen it yet, don’t miss our video blog post from yesterday that presents Phil and Friends’ guest stint on Nash Bridges.

For me it was April 15, 1999 when worlds collided. Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell join Phil, Steve Kimock and John Molo. They started off with this version of “Viola Lee Blues” that just didn’t want to end. Amazing!

7.3.2006 @ the meadows in hartford, ct. phil and friends ( larry campbell, joan osborne, john molo, greg osby, rob barraco, and barry sless ) opened for g.r.a.b.trey joined them for the entire 2nd set: trey singing on candy man by jerry garcia was amazing! fortunately i purchased the cd and listen to it often.

One for Woody show was the most special as it was the first incarnation of Phil Lesh Quintet. They shot out the box @ Roseland Ballroom ~ jammed in and out so hard of infinite universes before hitting the brakes, doing a full 180, and slipping into Dark Star. Then and there, the Q was born

Probably 4/18/00 at The Beacon when Warren Haynes came out and played for the whole second set along with Phil, Jimmy Herring, Jeff Pevar, Rob Barraco, and John Molo. You could feel the music being taken to another level with Warren up there and that something special was happening. The next time Phil and Friends played The Beacon, Warren was a full-on member of the band and the rest is history.

First of all, I have too may great memories – thank you, Phil!!! If I have to pick one – it was the time machine that Phil invited us into located in Glens Falls, NY on 10/20/07. From making Trey sing “Test me, test me – why don’t arrest me” mere miles from White Hall in the first set – to that monster of a second set – followed by the most heartfelt Box of Rain I ever heard. Just the best time! Old School and “of the moment” at the same time. THAT was a ride!

It was at the Woodstock place ~ During the Cumberland Blues I could not contain my excitement and joy ~ It reminded me of the daze of yore ~ I celebrated so much that evening and left with that energy and used it in my life ~ I miss Jerry and Kingdom of dirty feet Kings and Queens ~ I respect the many bands of Phil and owe him for bringing my broken dead heart back to the family ~ Much love to all of us ~ We are one special fan damily ~ PS The combo of Warren and Jimmy still fry my eggs ~ Blessings from the red head ~

For me it was the tremendous spectacle of the three December 2004 Warfield shows. So much effort was placed into the story and setlists, the selection of players and the amazing artwork…I’ve never been part of such an extravaganza. Oh, yeah, the music was OFF THE CHARTS! And free SBDs to boot. Phil loves us and we love Phil.

Shaking Phil’s hand in the hotel lobby before the Phall Philmore shows in Denver in 1999….Going to see what would become known as The Quintet on a Thursday night off in Chicago and then quiting my job so I could see the band revive my faith in GD music for the next 3 nights….Being instructed by Phil to “freak freely” in Vail….

There have been alot of great memories over the past 12 years, but the 04’ Warfield run with Herring, Sless, RRE guys, Jackie and Gloria were the best.
Nothing like seeing Phil in church !!
See ya at the Landing :)

The shows that really stick out to me were the three warfield shows after the dead run in September 03. I just flew down from the gorge after seeing the three west coast dead shows that melted my mind and i needed me some more. I woke up every morning super early just to get in line. I was front row every night right in front of jimmy. The first night they let us lean on the stage and i could almost tie jimmy’s shoes. From the first note of Scarlet Begonias to begin the shows all the way to the Bid You Goodnight to end the run you were left with your jaw wide open and a smile that would enlighten any person that would pass you by on your way to your hotel or home…........ No matter what when on in the day leading up to a phil show I always felt reborn and washed away of my probems when i left them. Bless your souls and hearts to all the friends over the years you hold a part of my heart forever. Much Love

December 2004 Warfield run (where the lineup was kept secret). Travelled on a whim from NY for my first trip west literally a day after a grueling 3 week stint as a juror for a federal murder case. Needless to say I needed some good music. First night, just as the majestic opening “Times they are a changing” started filtering to the hallway I was trying to convince the guy guarding the door to the floor to let me in. Explained how I came all the way from NY, etc. Finally, he asks to see my driver’s license (to see if I was truly a NY’er) and with a smile lets me on through. Next thing I know I’m standing 15 feet in front of Phil as they blast into ‘Cosmic Charlie’ (a moniker bestowed upon me by a deadhead friend at work). In an instant the accumulated weirdness of the past few weeks evaporated.

june third 2007. phil had taken some time off and i was nervous that the ride may be over. that night made me take every moment and live it to the fullest. i had seen many shows from 88 on and felt scared it was over. i now feel every show is a gift. i find more to enjoy in every show and i see it in alot of peoples eyes still. that show at the mountain jam told me he had much to do still and we were still on the bus.thanks to phill. hope phil and friends play many more gigs in the future, and mabey the mountain again this year

7/6/02 at the Gathering of the Vibes does it for me. Not only is it one of my all time favorite show moments, but hands down one of the best musical experiences i’ve had with any band. The Q had that entire festival eating out of their hands that night, and when they dropped into shakedown you could feel the entire festival grounds start dancing! Ask anyone who was there and I think they will share the same story…BRING BACK THE Q and thanks!

For me it was Bonnaroo 2008. The afternoon after his late night P&F set Phil and some of his friends did an acoustic set. It was so good people all around me, including myself, literally had tears in their eyes. Best show of all that weekend!

During a run at the beacon in February 06, a friend turned to me and asked me what I’d love to hear them play. Knowing they were long shots, I called for a Reuben and Cherise and a Cats under the stars. She turned and proceeded to tell me How crazy I am. The next week, in Upper Darby, at the Tower theater, 2/25/06, Cats, 2/26/06 Reuben. Take that Stacy. Tall orders sometimes get filled.

hippymtnbkr February 8, 2012, 10:12:50

this past years Warren Haynes Christmas Jam. 12/10/11 with Warren Haynes, Jackie Greene, Jeff Chimenti & Joe Russo & Jimmy Herring jamming at the end. Just hit me as some of the best jamming I heard in a while

Michael McMullan February 8, 2012, 10:55:17

For me its 5/29/99 Mountain Aire show. Warren’s first show with Phil…Merl, Kimock, Molo, Donna. First time Warren sang Patchwork Quilt. Also a very interesting set list (in no particular order) — Alligator, Confusion, Resurrection Rag, She Said, She Said, Mountain Jam, Wolfman’s Brother, Blue Sky, Midnight Hour, Mountains of the Moon. While I believe the “Q” was the best PAF ensemble, I believe this was the beginning of the Phil/Warren relationship!

NanC February 9, 2012, 00:44:16

Phil and Friends at Bimbos, the crowd singing along to “Wish You Were Here” during set break, and Phil just hanging on stage soaking it all in. And then proceeding to build on the energy and play the best ever Phil and Friends show, to date.
