Doctor’s Orders: What music do you turn to in times of stress or strife?

This seemed like a fitting moment to revisit this question…

As of my today we finally have power restored to our home, following Hurricane/Tropical Storm/General Nuisance Irene. To be honest it wasn’t all that stressful, as we chatted, played board games, read books and of course listened to music (until our supply of C batteries was exhausted). Still the situation led me to wonder what music many of you turn to in stressful times? Post your answers below and I promise that at least one will appear in Relix...

The Grateful Dead’s “Ripple” has helped me through some tough times over the years.

I’m with you on the Dead but for whatever reason I gravitate towards “Row Jimmy” or “Brokedown Palace.”

I like to get mired in the blues as I work things through. The Allman Brothers Band’s At Fillmore East has helped…

i went mostly for some Beatles, Beach Boys, and dozin at the knick

When I’m really stressed in an angry sense, I listen to Shine or Push on ‘til the Day by TAB. I also go with DwD or Kill Devil Falls by Phish. In a sad or exhausting stress, I listen to Stevie Ray or Herbie Hancock.

Grace Potter’s “Nothing But the Water” Part 2, Amy Winehouse “Tears Dry on Their Own” and “Valerie”, chill with some Massive Attack’s Blue Lines or Lips’ Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

Ben Harper’s old stuff from say “Diamonds on the Inside” and “Live from Mars” really strokes the wounded places in my heart and mind. The tone of his voice, the soft lullaby that he and the old boys move in and out of as ben’s voice brings you to gospel Sunday high and back down into the dark, mirky night is just something I have found unmatched in music.

Beach House > Real Estate was all the rage at my apt

“Ripple”, “Uncle John’s Band”, or “Box of Rain” are like a soft mattress and warm comforter on a freezing night. Then something like “Everybody Has the Blues” by James Taylor and some Todd Rundgren, along with a calming spiritual song like “Sacred Silence” to remind me that all shall be well. Next thing you know I’m lost in the music and the stress is way lower if not gone.

Nothing can part the veil of a cloudy mind like the weathered voice of Tom Waits on “Falling Down”. It slices through the pain like a lighthouse calling weary sailors home.

For me it is this amazingly beautiful audience recording ofTuning>Jam>Ship of fools from the Grateful Dead’s June 23, 1974 show at Jai Alai Fronton. It is mellow, very short and it just soothes my soul. I can start my day with this every day or in stressful moments I let this take me to another dimension. GD’s Estimated Prophet. Makes me realize everyone else is crazy and I’m the only sane person. “You’ve been alseep, you wouldn’t believe me”

Check out The Soul Stirrers: Early Sides, Japanese import and anything by them with RH Harris as lead singer (Specialty put out a disc with Sam Cooke at the helm and took out the awful instrumental overdubs — so this one counts). Sublime stuff and it gets better and better with each listening. Soul soothing.

The Jerry Garcia Band always cheers me up when I am blue. I have a hurricane playlist that we listen to when there is a hurricane. The word hurricane is mentioned in the lyrics.

Recently Phish is what is doing it for me – Show of life; Light; Free; Limb by Limb; My Mind’s got a Mind of its own; Loving cup. But, GD actually Furthur 2010 Gathering of the Vibes Terrapin Station, actually their whole set of 2010 is uplifting.

Early Jim Croce always calms me and puts me in a good mood. Also, Etta James will make me happy in one note. :) So many to name but I will spare everyone.

Martin Jr September 21, 2011, 23:46:31

Grateful Dead pre-1980, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Muddy Waters, Diga . . .

Waylon Ray Leonard September 22, 2011, 10:36:43

Marshall Tucker Band. I would recommend their Long hard Ride album for when things are bad. The album is about pain and dealing with it being a relationship, death, or money.

As much as I love the Dead, if I’m stressed or down, I listen to Nick Drake. His music is so plaintive, poignant and sad, it actually comforts me. Also Sinead O’Connor’s reggae album Throw Down Your Arms is a boost.

Someone who is very seldom mentioned in the world of Relix is Jimmy Buffett. When the world is always at the door, Jimmy has kept the smile on my face, and the dream alive…

I always turn to the Dead, Ripple, Uncle John’s Band, and Attics of My Life are top of the list.
