Doctor’s Orders: What band has most surprised you this summer?

By this point in the summer, I would expect that many of you have been out there making the festival rounds. I’d love to hear about the band that has most surprised you and knocked you on your butt (in the best way possible, of course). Once again, at least one of your responses will appear in the next Relix (I have grabbed a few for each of the past few issues).

Beats Antique! I finally saw them at All Good and it was much more than I had expected. Beyond the belly dancing, the music itself is quite enticing…

I was blown away by Jane’s Addiction at the Gatering of the Vibes. I was not there to see them (I barely have listened to them over the years) and thought they were real tight and powerful.

Van Ghost out of Chicago. They were great at Summer Camp. Jen Hartswick, Natalie Cressman and Allie Krall on stage with them.

Toubab Krewe really surprised me at All Good this year because the last time I’d seen them was at Bonnaroo in 2009 and their music has evolved so much since then. Loved it! Also, this wasn’t really a surprise but Umph late night blew my mind (even if it was cut short thanks to Furthur).

I was shocked by “Man Man” who I had never even heard of before I caught their insane Zappa-esque live show. They are out there doing something completely unique with many, many instruments and catchy hooks taboot.

Headstash, out of Lexington, KY has shocked me most not by what they’ve done, but who they have drawn to their shows. As summer has moved into full swing, it’s the artists who Headstash themselves admire who have been taking the time out to stop into their sets & see what they’re all about. It’s been wonderful to see the faces of the musicians you listen to on the way to a show appear in the crowd, having just as much fun as you are!! Luckily, there are many dates planned, so you can check them out for yourself! :)

I 2nd the Man Man sentiment. Wasn’t surprising per se because I already dig them a lot, but they straight own it live.

Digital Beat Down, and Steez at Summercamp…

Silly, yes – but Phish at the Gorge (especially the Friday night trippy show) was the most surprising good show. Best new band of the summer for me has been Cornmeal. That String Summit set was pretty awesome…
