Doctor’s Orders: What Has Been Your Favorite Show Over the Past Few Months?

Here’s one to think about over the next few days. Now that summer concert season is in motion, I’d love to hear what show has been your personal favorite from the past month or two. Name the band, venue, date and please provide some details. As with previous responses in this section, at least one of the answers will appear in the next issue of Relix.

Me? Why I’m glad you asked. I have Bonnaroo on the brain and while there were any number of amazing performances, I think I’d go with Del McCoury Band and Preservation Hall Jazz Band although I enjoyed much, much more including: Warren Haynes Band, Futurebirds, String Cheese, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, Florence and the Machine, MiniBoone, Alberta Cross, Mumford & Sons…

For me it was the Meters with Dr. John at Bonnaroo. Just inspiring to see what those guys can still do…

my favorite show from the past few months goes back to March 15th. It was the Furthur show on Phils 71st birthday and after waiting in line at the box office for 3 hours they released extra tickets. After getting my ticket I was walking to a deli and ran into Phil as he casually strolled across Broadway. We chatted for a moment, I wished him happy birthday, and then Furthur killed it. They finished off the Abby Road album that night after playing a track or 2 during each previous show.

my friend went to see her first Phish show in Cinci and said it was the best concert she’s ever seen!

Eddie June 17, 2011, 22:22:56

Hangout Music Festival back in May of 2011 , best list of performers and friendly crowd , perfect party ~

Bobby June 18, 2011, 01:12:06

Phish – Darien Lake, simply incredible.

Stoltz June 18, 2011, 02:19:36

Gotta be String Cheese at Bonnaroo. Hundreds of balloons, giant inflatable T-Rex, guys with jet packs, oh yeah, and an amazing set full of great jams. Overall one of the best shows I’ve seen.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals- March in Orlando!!!

For me it was Robert Randolph at the Brooklyn Bowl back in May. Just pure energy in one of my favorite venues, and as if Robert’s pedal steel skills weren’t enough, got to see him bring out the great John Popper on harmonica, and ?estlove on the drums. Highlight of the show was the cover of Bel Biv Devoe’s “Poison”, but they also brought the house down on “I Need More Love”

My Morning Jacket’s album release party at the Louisville Palace was pretty epic.

Matt Wasel June 18, 2011, 12:14:45

The energy created at Phish 6/1/11 Holmdel; during the start of the 2nd set as the rain fell, the lightning flashed and the boys jammed Tweezer>No Quarter (the first ever!) I love that Zep tune, cool choice…..Great moment in time where the crowd, nature, and Phish were together in the moment…..epic for sure.

Phish 6-3-2011 at Pine Knob outside of Detroit. It was my first Phish show and the first set was solid but the second set was epic. The Down With Disease>Fluffhead>David Bowie was worth the price of admission by its self. The rest of the set was good to and to get Also Sprach Zarathustra that night to was great as that was the song that turned me on to Phish.

My 2 Cents.
PHISH 6/17/11 Charlotte show was amazing. Forbin’s,Famous Mockingbird,Icculus. Wilson, Loving cup encore. Fishman singing Bike, playing the vacuum and running around the stage having a blast. Trey said read the fucking book. It was an epic night for the lucky ones who attended.

RocKorea. 6/4. Funky rock of Sotto Gamba, plus Leotard Skynyrd (Japanese Skynyrd cover band) Sticky Fingers (Stones) & Over the Hills & Far Away (Zep). We don’t get a lot of quality music here, so a well run mini-fest was a welcome surprise. Plus, burlesque!

Wyllys w/ The New York Hustler Ensemble – 5/27/11 @ Summercamp Music Festival, Chilicothe, IL. Unlike any music I’ve ever heard, unlike any place I’ve even seen. The epitome of a true music festival. Hundreds of wild, wacky people keeping the party alive into the wee hours of the morning, while Wyllys (who I’d never heard before) spun some seriously funky and danceable tunes, with two beautiful women (Jennifer Hartswick & Natalie Cressman) singing soulful vocals and playing live horns! Live house/disco/funk + live horns + Memphis style back up singing??? wild! It was the most fun I’d since…Umphrey’s just a few before!

My favorite show over the past few months had to be Phish June 4 2011 at blossom music center in cuyahoga falls ohio. Killer setlist Guyute Guelah Papyrus Sneakin Sally Lizards Harry Hood Have Mercy and a first time played Steam(awesome song). The energy was up the boys were on and the crowd was just one of those crowds we all love. Cant wait for the next one.

The Mule at Mountain Jam a few weeks back!! It’s such a wonderful thing to see true mucisianship…..after months off and probably minimal to no rehersal…..the MULE rocked the mountain!!! From our perspective, they also had lots of fun playing this gig…..a great sign of a continuing Mule. See you in Jamaica in 6 months!

Audra L June 22, 2011, 14:46:35

Deep Purple @ Bethel Woods June 12th was my most out of the ordinary and excellent! Mountain Jam was my annual favorite. The awesomeness of bands was endless this year!

Joey G June 22, 2011, 14:53:37

Phish 6.17.2011 Charlotte, NC Great show with something for everyone! The Rock & Roll>Ghost is why I follow this band.

Jake B June 22, 2011, 15:30:33

The Avett Brothers and Michael Franti back-to-back on the Main Stage at Mt Jam. 2 very exciting, fun and uplifting bands set against the beautiful backdrop of the Catskill Mountains on a perfect day!!!

Matt carpenter June 23, 2011, 00:14:47

It was a close tie so far. I gotta agree that the Phish show in Clarkston, Mi (Pine Knob) was outstading, but the show that towered would have to be the Flaming Lips show at the Filmore in Detroit, Mi. That the happiest crowd I’ve ever seen out here. Wayne made it a personal experience for everyone there by even coming out in the space bubble… Unforgettable!

elph June 23, 2011, 19:13:54

Gotta say that Phish @ Cuyhoga Falls & Cinci were both killer shows. The best i’ve seen from the boys in years!

Jack June 30, 2011, 12:50:19

brent frasier July 5, 2011, 20:56:16

ZOOGMA ‘s two sets at Wakarusa were fucking epic! And MMJ at waka!

Maria July 7, 2011, 00:15:05

Phish at Bethel Woods Memorial Day weekend! Unbelievable!! Beautiful venue, filled with history and good karma, and absolutely fantastic music!! I’ve been seeing the boys for nearly 20 years and these shows were truly epic!
