Doctor’s Orders: What Show Would You Include on an All-Time Greatest List?

Last week we reposted our 50 Greatest Concerts 1959-2009 list. If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s part one (50-31), part two (30-11) and part three (10-1). Now we’d like to hear your voice. Share a show or two that you feel should make the list. Once again, at least one of your responses will run in Relix.

It’s pretty ridiculous and inexplicable that you didn’t include Live Aid. Regardless of what you may think of the London/Philly lineups, you simply cannot reasonably deny the impact of the show, whether due to the motivation behind it or the musical highlights (Led Zep & Who reunions, Paul McCartney’s surprise appearance, the unbelievable Queen set, etc.) Speaking of Queen, the Freddie Mercury Concert from Wembley Stadium in ’91 should also be on the list. You may not be a fan of George Michael, but when each and every person at a sold out Wembley Stadium sings the “lo-ooooo-oo-oove” part in “Somebody to Love” in unison, you have to respect it. Throw in a Bohemian Rhapsody with Elton John and Axl Rose, and, let’s face it, it belongs on the list. I’d also throw in a couple of Billy Joel shows, both at The Bottom Line in ’76 and the Last Play at Shea in ’08 with McCartney, Daltrey, etc., as well as the last night of the Genesis ’87 tour at Wembley Stadium, and, separately, both Rush (‘03) and Iron Maiden (‘01) in Rio, but that’s just my opinion (albeit an accurate one).

Looking at that list makes me realize how hard it all is. I guess individual performances and not festivals are included but how about Hendrix at Woodstock?

This goes out to anyone who was at 161 Hudson back in the day. I’d have to include one of those classic Blues Traveler performances where they closed the rollgates and the band played until dawn. I’d probably go with the 3 sets on 1/18/90, which was one of those evenings with the water dripping from the ceiling and the umbrella over the soundboard.

I noticed that a Radiohead show is on the list but I think it’s the wrong one. You have to go with Bonnaroo 2006. Thom Yorke himself has said that was the band’s greatest show of all time…

“Simon and Garfunkle in Central Park” should definitely be included, as well as the “PFM” concert in central park in 1972!!! Also noted should be the first “Jam in the Dam” in 2005, the first ever European Jam festival featuring the Disco Biscuits, Umphrey’s McGee, Keller Williams and Particle giving stellar performances!!! Unbelievable was also the Medeski, Martin and Wood FREE concert on the beach of San Sebastian in the summer of 2003!!!
