Doctor’s Orders: What’s Your Favorite Musical Side Project?

Okay I’m partial to Legion of Mary: Jerry Garcia, Merl Saunders, John Kahn, Martin Fierro and Ron Tutt

We’ve just reprinted the Top 20 Side Projects story from the April-May issue of Relix. After you take a look at that piece, I’d like you to come back this way and share some enthusiasm for your favorite side project. Once more, at least one of your responses will run in Relix. Oh yes, and congratulations to Richard G, Frankie T, Allen M and Robert S who won copies of our Furthur issue signed by Bob Lesh and Bob Weir (Please send me an email with your contact info)

Gotta say for me, it’s BK3… Billy Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), Scott Murawski (Max Creek), O’teill Burbridge (ABB)!!! They Rock!!! KungFu kicks it pretty hard too! (;

Vida Blue was great whilst it lasted, feel fortunate to have caught them a couple of times; once in cincy on their first tour, and after Phish NYE Miami.
Have to tip my hat to the original article though, The WORD is the best sideproject/supergroup since the wilburys. Ive never seen anything like it, truly amazing stuff. The Word should always be performed outside, saw them at 930club in DC and the small venue couldnt contain the power/emotion of the music. i first saw them at Bonnaroo 4, it was a religious-like experience. Everyone was sooo happy to be hearing it. Impromptu circles of people holding hand and dancing brought tears to the eye.

Oh man! Legion of Mary really scratches that itch for me. Martin Fierro just puts this over the top but its Jerry and Merl at their creative peaks

Now that Chris Michetti is full-time with Conspirator, that band is kicking ass and taking names…

Hard to beat 7 Walkers right now. George Porter Jr (funky METERS), Papa Mali, Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson, Fastball) and the great Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead). More of a supergroup than a side project. As for a side project, I’m pretty fond of Bradford Cox’ (Deerhunter) Atlas Sound persona. Almost more so than his original band who I like a great deal

I gotta go with Phil and Friends’ 1999 Warfield run with Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, Steve Kimock, and John Molo. How can you beat a hybrid of the two greatest jambands ever? The setlists read like phantasy setlists that jam heads could only dream of and they sound even better! You can tell that Trey feels both honored and quite comfortable filling the Jerry lead role, and his chemistry with Kimock is spine-tingling.
