Doctor’s Orders: What’s Your Favorite Furthur Song? (Win Copy of Relix Signed by Phil and Bobby)

Check it out, the latest issue of Relix features Bob Weir and Phil Lesh on the cover. We are sitting on a few signed copies over here that we’d be happy to pass along. If you like to win one, please write a paragraph or two below on your favorite song that Furthur plays these days (it doesn’t need to be a new original such as “The Mountain Song,” but rather you can choose any song in the group’s repertoire these days). We’ll run at least one of your responses in the magazine as well.

Rueben and Cherise. They first played it at their first show in New York City in 2009 at Hammerstein Ballroom (It was their 4th show ever) and I have never cried with such joy at a concert before or since that day, but I looked at my buddy and we couldn’t believe it. No words can express the sheer joy that I felt during that performance. As Darren on the bottom of the page said, the GD only played the song 4 times, and one of my high school teachers, who helped usher me into this scene, was at 3 of the 4, so I have heard so much about the power of this tune, and it is the only Jerry solo material that Furthur touches! I thought after the R&C that Run for the Roses might be game, My Sisters and Brothers, Aint No Bread in the Breadbox, etc. but this remains the only one. I haven’t caught another Rueben and Cherise since that wonderful show in 2009 but that’s what I hope for every time I go see them.

This is a Tricky Question for sure… but if I Had to pick just one I would have to agree with Weather Report Suite… I fancy myself a farmer so the lyrics here and the sound just Rock My Soul!
“Round and round, the cut of the plow in the furrowed field
Seasons round, the bushels of corn and the barley meal
Broken ground, open and beckoning to the spring; black dirt live again! The plowman is broad as the back of the land he is sowing
As he dances the circular track of the plow ever knowing
That the work of his day measures more than the planting and growing
Let it grow, let it grow, greatly yield! Yeah! That’s Right…
Deadheadred ;-D

Big Railroad Blues – Reminds me of the early days when both the GD and the JGB would play this song. It was one of the songs that defined them as the premier jam bands and led to the opening of the genre.

L.R.Smer March 6, 2011, 16:24:56

Wow, that’s tough all shows have had stellar setlists. The first night in Colorado & likewise in Boston tore me up-would have been great though to have been at any of the shows. Love the encore Friday night: “golden road to unlimited devotion” but am always a sucker for a good “(that’s it for) the other One”- the lyrics, phil’s bass … It gets into your soul.

wbbolin March 6, 2011, 17:30:51

- since the days of anthem of the sun i love ‘the other one’ - one of my all-time-greats: ‘cassidy’ - and last (hehehe): phil playing ‘the eye of horus’ (it’s not a song. it’s a wonderful instrument. a 6-string bass from jens ritter/germany…)

Stef G. February 25, 2011, 16:02:34

I’d have to say Weather Report Suite! I was so excited they started playing it. I wish the Grateful Dead had done it more. I just get caught up in the sweep and scope.

Jay B. February 25, 2011, 16:01:00

China Doll. A Jerry classic that John K delivers with power and poignance.

Shady Backflash February 25, 2011, 16:21:46

My favorite Furthur song is The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion.) The strength of Furthur, to me, is that it builds on all of the Phil Lesh and Friends projects over the years. One of the strongest parts of PL & F has been his eagerness to dust off old GD favorites and re-interpret them for a new audience. For people like myself who’ve only seen Jerry in the post-coma era, it is exciting to hear the Sixties songs that the Grateful Dead simply stopped playing. Songs like “Doin’ That Rag,” “Mountains of the Moon,” “Viola Lee Blues” and the like are all very exciting for me. I don’t have a template in my head of “how the Grateful Dead played them” so I don’t get hung up on nostalgia the way I do hearing John doing almost eerily perfect interpretations of Garcia. The Golden Road is the Grateful Dead anthem in a lot of ways, because it is a fan-inspired song that tells OUR STORY. And hearing Furthur play it with sparkle and energy and pizzazz makes me remember that I’m still on the Golden Road because it’s been a community for me, not just a chance to critique the way some notes are being played by some lovable old guys on a stage.

john malchow February 25, 2011, 17:04:21

a paragraph or two??? holy crap.um….do deadheads have the ability to write that much?? ha ha ha!! i know i don’t.but i can say i am digging Furthur a lot.they have what i have been looking for since Jerry passed (RIP Jerry) but if i had to pick a favorite tune the band is doing on a regular basis,i would say Magnolia mountain.very beautiful song sung by John.i think it’s a Ryan Adams tune?? no clue really.but i dig it!! hmmm i guess a deadhead can swing a paragraph!!! LOL so sign me up for an autographed copy please!! thanks

michael furlong February 25, 2011, 17:05:45

Michael Furlong fire on the mountain when i 1st was turned on to the grateful dead it was a friend in collage and it was dead set on LP we must have played that song a hundred times i think we wore that RECORD out yes i said record, lp, vinal the good ole days

Jerry Diaz February 25, 2011, 17:07:42

I was treated to Furthur’s first public attempt at “Time”. Pink and Dead fans alike have a brotherhood that stretches since the early days of both bands and to have them perform it on New Year’s Eve was all the more exciting. The opening riffs give you a sense of adventure and the addition of the back up singers make for a great addition to help the song along. John K covers Gilmore just about as well as Garcia, and Phil looks like a kid at Christmas when he thumps out the bass line on such a classic tune.

tom crowley February 25, 2011, 17:11:15

what song desn’t furthur play they’ve been digging up from the past everything..personally i’m a Bobby fan so his enterpretations of pig and his remakes of his always work for me

Jeff Schein February 25, 2011, 17:17:41

The entire Terrapin Station Suite! The first time I saw them play this was in Coney Island, Brooklyn. When they came to the end of the “Terrapin” section there was a brief pause before “Terrapin Transit” and I was yelling “DO IT! DOOOO IT!” and they DID it. I was in tears. Streaming down my face! And the biggest smile you can imagine. They KILL that one fro, start to finish!

Tyler Curtis February 25, 2011, 17:25:34

Unbroken Chain is without a doubt my favorite song that Furthur plays. as someone that saw Phil Lesh and Friends as his second concert ever, it is amazing to see that Phil gets to play that song with a group that is on their feet like Furthur. They execute it with such precision, and the looks on the faces of Phil and Bobby when they nail that song say it all for me. Throughout the whole song I am in that state of “chills” and tears can be found rolling down my face in aw. That is why I feel Furthur brings the heat like no other post Jerry project.
It’s a love of the music, and talent that allow Phil to present masterpieces like this in a brilliant setting. Pure bliss throughout all of “Unbroken Chain,” which I have heard them perform 4 times. “Unbroken Chain” is the song that represents the feelings on my behalf that I am lucky to see such a great band even without a huge part of the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia. It’s exactly the definition of taking it Furthur in all respects indeed.

E. Schmitz February 25, 2011, 17:33:01

Magnolia Mountain , the Eleven, and Caution all get repeat plays for me.

Richard Gagne February 25, 2011, 17:36:04

Terrapin Suite. The lyrical journey, where Hunter, the storyteller, seats the listeners around the campfire to spin a tale of love and contrasts…things we’ve never seen seeming familiar, winds both foul and fair, the sailor and the soldier, end or beginning…all the while making no choice and shedding light. The unfolding of the melancholic dips and the ear shattering crescendos across the music follows the cadence of the story creating auditory visuals for the careful listeners. Some of the musical peaks appropriately occur right before the inclusion of “At a Siding,” which in railroad terms, is a low speed section of track distinct from the main line, meant for lower speeds…where the lyrical and musical rhythm slow together…finishing back in Terrapin, for good or ill again. A musical and lyrical journey filled with imagery, evoking a feeling of contemplative yearning for more as the story never quite resolves itself and the storyteller gently flies away on sullen wings of fortune.

Nathan Golden February 25, 2011, 17:45:15

Caution is undeniably a trip to the early psychedelic days of the Grateful Dead. When played live it is as though one boards a most powerful train and goes on an incredible journey, chugging through tunnels and open spaces at a mind altering pace.

Henry Sidle February 25, 2011, 17:57:26

For me, it is “Bird Song”. I always love it when they play it. It was always a favorite of mine to listen to and is a gem when it shows up at a Furthur show. I love the guitar line that I’m always humming the tune to and it is a song that tends to be jammed out more than others. Just listening to the second night of Broomfield 2011, “Bird Song” definitely added to how special the second set was. I really love the Grateful Dead’s version more, especially acoustically, but Furthur can still play it well.

doug christenson February 25, 2011, 18:00:22

“One More Saturday Night” defines the essence of The Grateful Dead in a unique way. Dual guitars screaming out the first notes of the song in unison with each other force you to get up and begin the twirl that we have all come to know as “the thing you do when the boys are on stage.” It was played at my 1st shows during the legendary 1972 run at The Academy of Music in NYC just after Keith & Donna joined the band and it remains the dance number of recent Furthur shows. “...Just crank that old Victrola, put on your rocking shoes!”

Barry Stukenbroeker February 25, 2011, 18:12:08

I believe my favorite song Furthur is playing is the one they are playing at that moment. Since first seeing them in 2009 to the New Year’s Eve shows at the Graham, they have continued to grow and excite the music. I simply enjoy living in the moment of that song. Something I haven’t been able to say of any of the Post- Jerry reincarnations. I can tell they are all about creating and enjoying the music at that very minute.
And isn’t that what it is truly all about??
Can’t wait for Radio City!!
“ this is all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago “

Daniel Stoppel February 25, 2011, 18:20:57

Without a doubt I believe my favorite song Furthur is playing is The Other One.
I am a bit biased because I love that song, and I love the origins of the song and truly represents the early grateful dead. They referred to a piece of music as ‘the other one’, when they were just starting to have their own original tunes, and then it eventually stuck. Beautiful! It truly it seems like they have a strong connection to the song and it must bring back good memories. They have been playing it a lot lately and have really come over a hump that i feel they started climbing when they first played the song. I am super hyped about the tour and also that they are returning to the All Good festival. They will definitely cause a fire on the mountain there. Furthur is such a great band I am thrilled that they are still playing the music of the Grateful Dead.

Neil February 25, 2011, 18:23:46

King Solomon’s Marbles is by far my favorite tune at the moment. Furthur does an amazing job with this song. I Never paid much mind to this tune until I had the pleasure of catching it live at Coney Island last year. As the ‘ol saying goes, I finally GOT IT. Been hooked ever since and can’t wait to start chasing another King Solomon’s this spring! Viva la Furthur!

Kevin February 25, 2011, 19:03:04

Wharf Rat creeped me out the most. I liked to be creeped out so I would have to say that was my favorite.

Ty Ainley February 25, 2011, 19:38:07

For me, my favorite song Furthur has been performing lately is Big Bad Blues. The reason I picked a new Furthur creation is because what has always drawn me to the Dead’s music is that they always seem to able to keep it fresh, even after all these years. Big Bad Blues is the new tune I enjoy the most, and it makes me so happy that not only are Bobby and Phil playing together again in a more permanent fashion, but also that they are committed to making new music and not just relying on there past glories. In that sense, there band’s name is really appropriate!

Frankie Turner February 25, 2011, 21:12:24

I’d love one…I love some of the songs they didn’t play at all or not very much with The Grateful Dead(Phil songs) that I never got to hear live before in person like Pride of Cucamonga and espcially Unbroken Chain. I never understood why The Dead waited so long to play Unbroken Chain because it’s such a great song and so is Cucamonga which they never played live to my knowledge. I also dig them playing “Just a little light” which was probably my favorite Brent song and it sounds great. I also really like the Ryan Adams cover of “Magnolia Mountain” they do very well and after I saw them in both ATL and Asheville last year I had that song in my head for months afterwards hehe. Of course both shows to me were very special and I have been a fan of The Dead since I was 12 so I can’t get enough of seeing anything Dead related and I hope they play for as long as they can and it’s great seeing Phil and Bobby playing together again so much. I met Phil a long time ago at a show in Birmingham but didn’t think it was appropriate to ask him for an autograph at a show but I would really love to have both his and Bobby’s autographs to add to my collection of ticket stubs and other special things to me and would probably frame it real nice with my stubs. One more song that I had in my head for months after the shows last year was “Death don’t have no mercy” There is a show I have from 1969 at the Orpheum in Boston that has an awesome version on it and had always wanted to hear it live and even though it wasn’t Jerry singing it I really really enjoyed their version. Thanks for the oppurtunity to even try and get something like this!!! Thanks again for coming back to ATL @ The Fox (I love that place!) Peace! Frankie

Allen Murphy February 25, 2011, 21:05:07

The Furthur song that has impacted me the most has been “So Many Roads”. It is such a great Jerry song that had been missing from the repertoires of the previous reincarnations of the Dead. Like some of the other unreleased treasures of the early 90’s, there are limited appearances in the Grateful Dead archives of this song so we Deadheads have been left wanting and wondering what could have been if the song had continued to blossom. John does a beautiful job with both the vocals and the haunting guitar solos, bringing the song to life with each note. I have been lucky enough to experience the song multiple times during my evenings spent with Furthur. The most memorable rendition I have witnessed was at the 2010 All Good Festival. The band was clean and deliberate in their playing and as the song was about to climax during the third chorus, a gentle and pleasant rain began to fall from the sky out of nowhere. This natural wonder brought tears to my eyes as I reflected on the theme of the song and how distinctly Jerry it was. I don’t think it was the spirit of Jerry that made me cry as much as the spirit of the Dead, the spirit of music, and the spirit of life that I was experiencing on that beautiful moonlit mountain evening.

Derek February 25, 2011, 21:01:54

My favorite song that Furthur plays these days is Terrapin Suite. It was very cool of them to bust out the whole thing. I think it is a song that John and Joe play particularly well. I’m just glad Phil and Bobby are adding more songs to the repertoire and still playing.

Entropy4205 February 25, 2011, 21:02:06

Terrapin station has to be my favorite song of any band period . The interpretation of Furthur lastest rendition of the dead masterpiece really does justice to this tune. When I first found out that Furthur was performing the entire suite I jumped at a chance to hear the rarely performed section. As most of you know terrapin was performed as a seven part suite on the original album. The suite consists of Lady With A Fan; Terrapin Station; Terrapin; Terrapin Transit; At A Siding; Terrapin Flyer and Refrain. In concert , The Grateful dead usually just performed lady with a fan > terrapin
station. Furthur has resurrected the rest of the song for the dead faithful. I really love the idea of Furthur taking dead songs and playing them in their own light. So next time I’m at Furthur could you guys drop the masterpiece for me ? Thanks in advance

Travis R February 25, 2011, 20:36:46

“The Music Never Stopped”... The whole message and vibe of this song pretty much sums up the band (FURTHUR)! The first time I was able to experience them singing it as a group was during on of the Eugene Or 2010 shows. Bobby’s vocals were a little off during this night but he pushed on and the lyrics held true!
“No one’s noticed but the bands all packed and gone we’re they ever here at all? Everybody’s dancin”...
Pretty sure that’s the vibe they leave everywhere when they play, at least I’d like to think so : )

james taylor February 25, 2011, 20:44:25

my favorite Furthur song is the Rolling Stones cover “We Love You” I thought they did an outstanding job on an obscure but very cool song and it fit the band like a glove. I’m looking forward to seeing more good stuff from Furthur in the future.

Alan February 25, 2011, 22:55:41

Furthur is playing so well right now and there are so many wonderful rearrangements being presented. Just like I can’t pick just one show that was my favorite, I can’t pick just one song. I love that they are so tight on their odd meter jams during songs like Unbroken Chain and The Eleven. The vocals are tighter than ever – Attics of My Life was so beautiful in Broomfield. Death Don’t Have No Mercy has been incendiary – Jeff can really rock a B3. I’m just so glad that they are happy and healthy and still enjoying the ride. Ramble on Rose!

Spacewalker February 25, 2011, 23:39:14

I have always loved when they do covers of other bands songs, and watching them do “Time” by Pink Floyd was just awesome. The tightness of their jams and the soul in their singing is inspiring to me.I love taking my 13 year old son (Jer) to see them, and when they played Time he couldn’t believe how great they were at covering Floyd. As far as Grateful Dead songs go,the Terrapin Suite is always wicked, and reminds me of all the wonderful tours i had the pleasure to experience. These guys are just amazing live and gives me a chance to share my favorite music with my son,who will continue to play and listen to these guys long into the future. Thanks Phil and Bob (and Furthur) for all the happiness you have given us through your music.

Janet Bogan February 26, 2011, 09:01:48

Do we have to choose just one song?? That’s putting the pressure on pretty strong…. I’m going to step outside of the bounds of the “one song rule” and lay it on ya. It has been a delight to hear the boys bring back some good old Gratef…ul Dead treasures – namely Alligator, Cream Puff War, Hard to Handle, Sittin’ On Top of the World, Doin’ That Rag, Caution, and Mason’s Children – but of all the good oldie’s they’ve brought back the one that blew me away was the full Terrapin w/flyer. Just gives me chills reminiscing….

James Matuse February 26, 2011, 12:37:54

I for one am excited to have Hunter back on board…to me, he was more instrumental to Garcia’s songs than Bernie Taupin was to good ole Elton John. Take a listen to “Big Bad Blues”, and you KNOW those are Hunter’s lyrics…so not to take away from the stellar jam-brews these guys are distilling on a regular basis now, but my highlight is “Big Bad Blues”, and painting those pictures of cards and cowboys in my head again as I dance, dance, dance the night away. Bless you boys, you have truly shown us something built to last.

david winn February 26, 2011, 12:40:43

It’a very hard to choose one song out so many great ones, but if I had to pick one it would be One More Saturday night. I’m it’s staple for many a fan. The great is you can always expect in on a Saturday which is the one song you know they’re going to play. It always gets the crowd a moving and a grooving and just sets everyone in a great mood and is always a fun way to end a fun and magnificent show.

Brad Chandler February 26, 2011, 12:59:06

My favorite Furthur tune right now is Let It Grow. I enjoy the hope and inspiration that song builds into and is a treat everytime I hear it.

Robin N February 26, 2011, 17:02:47

I agree with others that it is impossible to pick just a few favorites songs that Furthur plays, so I’m tuning into an emotional vibe for my response. Therefore I have to say, “Uncle John’s Band.” While many songs bring me to a place of connecting to Jerry via a deep heart connection, or some permanent hard-wiring in my nervous system, Uncle John’s Band has to be the ONE. It is such a joy to step back, breathe, listen, dance, and FEEL that song and that connection pulsating through time, my being, the band, and the crowd. We will survive, we have survived, this LOVE is eternal. Thank you!

Dutch Quinn February 26, 2011, 17:47:22

I’ve been on the “Bus” for 40 years, I’m an old man now, but to me Dark Star is what it’s all about, always has been, since 1967, no two are the same and the band gets to stretch out and travel into the far reaches of the universe,,,,“Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion”, Amen

max sherman February 27, 2011, 02:41:31

While my favorite dead songs switch daily and unexpectedly there are always a few that stick out and get played more often. However, there is one set of tunes that never has until I witnessed it live in september at red rocks. The second night (9.25.10) opened with help on the way > slipknot > franklin’s tower which are always played in the order. And oh my G_d the first notes Phil dropped on his modulus that night were pure insanity. People were moving everywhere and every way. Help on the way was blistering, but the transitioning tune of slipknot is permanently engrained in my brain. Phil’s bombs that start and begin slipknot are some of the most classically composed bass guitar lines that exist. Not to mention Joe Russo is an octopus.

Steve Cowan February 27, 2011, 15:34:14

My favorite song that Furthur plays these days is Dear Mr Fantasy. It was first performed by the Grateful Dead in June 1984 and sung by Brent Mydland. Mydland added contributions such as high vocal harmonies and emotional leads highlighting the song. Mydland’s last show with The Grateful Dead was on July 23rd 1990 at The World Music Theater. Mydland died of a drug overdose at his home on July 26, 1990, shortly after completing the band’s summer tour. As you know John Kadlecik co-founded a band known as Dark Star Orchestra with a keyboardist Scott Larned. Scott took on Dr. Mr Fantasy and would sing it with amazing emotion and precision. On the afternoon of April 24th, 2005, Scott died of heart failure while on tour with Dark Star Orchestra in his hotel room in Virginia after the last of two shows held at the State Theater in Falls Church. I was lucky enough to see the grateful dead in my life, however I never got to see them with Brent Myndland. I was a big fan of Dark Star Orchestra and feel that the loss of Scott Larned could never be replaced or replicated. I feel that when John Kadlecik sings Dear Mr Fantasy it is both a tribute to his close friend Scott Larned and a tip of the hat to the late Brent Mydland. Jeff Chimenti’s soulful piano playing and John’s voice compliment Dear Mr Fantasy and make it a real treat to any setlist that Furthur perform.

Karl Mirke February 27, 2011, 15:47:13

I’d say that my favorite Furthur song is King Solomon’s Marbles. Such a great song showing off great timing and musicianship. Plus it’s a great treat considering how rarely it’s played ! Although it was a hard decision as I love Furthur’s interpitations of all of the Dead songs, covers & new originals

Darren Piechowicz February 28, 2011, 11:54:20

Colors of the Rain, would be a favorite FURTHUR song of mine.

Francesco Marano February 28, 2011, 12:32:48

Wharf Rat, hands down! I’ve been following Furthur since they started in ’09, have downloaded, and listened to, every show they’ve played (thanks to the archive and tapers!), and have been to a few shows and must say that John K nails Wharf Rat EVERYTIME!

Brendan February 28, 2011, 13:13:51

The 11/19/10 show at the DCU Center in Worcester MA was kicked off with an Alligator that John K sang beautifully, followed up by a powerful Cream Puff. I know I wasn’t the only one who got a kick out of it- Bill Walton walked by me right then and looked equally as excited!

Oscar Ruiz February 28, 2011, 14:54:20

Terrapin Station Suite complete

Rich Saputo February 28, 2011, 14:54:38

My favorite has to be “Viola Lee Blues”. They have definitely grown since they started doing this tune. It’s a real nice treat whenever they do ANY Jerry song, but this one just ‘does’ it for me. The jams are always amazing. John K definitely knows how to channel Garcia.

Marc Daniel February 28, 2011, 14:58:31

The May 28 soundcheck at Furthurfest in Angels Camp Calavaras CA opened with my favorite Dead song -The Eleven ( ok one of my favorites)> Eyes of the World > Dark Star > Bird Song .
I surmise that if Jerry had played that set list us hippies would have arisen in the rapture.
44 years of shows and just let them play what they want and I’ll keep listening.

jodi z February 28, 2011, 16:45:30

We saw the show last year on Valentine’s Day at Cornell…..after quite a long, strange journey to get there my son, husband, and myself loved the show. It was killer oldschool style…sitting on the bleachers…. Peggy-O was super special because when we got married in Sept. of 2009, that was our first dance song (I walked down the isle to Stella Blue), so it was like a valentines present just for us!!! My 8 year old son’s favorite Dead tune is Sugaree and he was rocking out to that as well…....I love Further, but my heart hurts when I think about how much I miss Jerry :)

Christy arrington February 28, 2011, 17:03:39

My favorite as of late has to be Brokedown Palace, they closed with this melody after 3 perfect days at the most amazing Red Rocks this past September. It was truly a magical experience. The full moon hovered above the stage as the crowd swayed to the music while holding each other, everyone enveloped in song and in unity. Brought tears to your eyes!

Orion Prim March 1, 2011, 18:33:39

I had a religious experience when they performed Ryan Adams’ Magnolia Mountain at Red Rocks last September. Gimme one of those Spring tour in a show with something big like a Terrapin Suite I’ll be a happy camper. Oh, also at Red Rocks they went into Viola Lee Blues three times in one show and it was SICK SICK SICK!

Bart March 1, 2011, 12:08:27

Tough call – to me, the best parts of Furthur is seeing Phil & Bobby play the songs I never got the chance to see live (Alligator, Terrapin Suite, Weather Report, King Solomon’s) & the new songs (hoping for more Hunter breakouts in the Spring) but what I am really hoping to catch most is a Mountain Song – wasn’t expecting the new songs to be as good as they are and this one blows me away. I am also hoping for some more Phil singing Phil songs- (Tom Thumb’s, Broken Arrow, Childhood’s End) and more Brent tunez! See you in Philly!

Jon March 1, 2011, 15:29:45

Franklin’s Tower!

Shayna March 1, 2011, 15:31:22

Dear Mr. Fantasy. Blows me away, always

Ben B March 1, 2011, 15:35:55

I ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s Farm no morrrre…

CHayes March 1, 2011, 15:39:28

Has to be Ryan Adams’ “Nobody Girl;” hands down! John’s sweet and passionate vocals just blow me away when they break into that one. Just having Further cover that tune, not to mention giving Ryan Adams the recognition he deserves, is a testament to their diversity and “grateful dead-ish” quality that fans everywhere have been hungering for. Furthur On!

I’ll take “Furthur Song” as meaning a song they debuted/developed of which there are a growing number, and in that case I’d have to say “Mountain Song” a re-imagining of the old PERRO tune from the early 70’s.

I love “Mountain Song,” When Furthur started playing the PERRO song, it was purely magical. They took a song that The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, CSN, and Quicksilver Messenger Service all contributed too in 1971, and Furthur made it their own started last year. Every time Furthur plays “Mountain Song,” it gets better and better. I’m hoping to see them perform it April 3rd at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA

I really enjoyed them playing Wharf Rat. At one of the shows I have attended it seemed to come out of nowhere, which was sweet. I just think this band is rockin right now and they found a great spirit and player in John K. I’ve seen him dozens of times with DSO and always thought he would fit well with what Bobby and Phil were doing. Including Jeff in this band was a must too. Go see Furthur! Can’t wait for some upcoming shows in my future.

I saw Furthur for the first time at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium for both nights of New Year’s Eve celebrations! I have to say, it blew my mind! Unfortunately, I was late to jump on the deadhead bus, and never had the opportunity to see Jerry. However, I can safely say that any regrets I may have about that are relieved after having experienced those Furthur shows. I was immediately pumped up when they opened with Shakedown Street on 12/30 – that is one of my all time favorite Dead songs! We Bid You Goodnight was awesome as well, you could really feel the energy of the crowd. But I have to say (if it’s even possible to pick only one favorite) that Terrapin Station is it. A long time favorite of mine, it never gets old. Especially not when you have the luxury of being able to watch the guys jam live. Simply Wonderful! Thanks Furthur for so many wonderful tunes, that it’s almost impossible to pick a favorite!

My favorite furthur song to hear live is Alligator. I got on the bus in 1981, and after seeing 200 some odd shows I do not believe I have ever heard the boy’s play alligator live. I have been fortunate enought to catch about 8 furthur shows so far, and they’ve played Alligator at 3 of the 8 shows. The song reminds me of the Grateful Dead themselves (and furthur by extension). On the surface one can say the song is ok, but nothing special. But when I hear this song live I can feel the magic. For me, it makes me feel like I am hearing the boys of yesteryear. I can almost sense Pigpen and Jerry standing there on stage. The song still has that old “let’s grove” sound, and I like that it has not been updated too much. It’s like that old, comfortable pair of shoes, I hear the song and I know it’t time to put all your troubles aside and just twirl and groove, like there’s nothin left to do but smile, smile, smile :) It has been played quite heavily in the rotation the past couple of or so, similar to the way you could almost guarantee seeing Minglewood Blues every 3rd Dead show or so. One thing I really enjoy is the song is free form engough so the band can take this where they wish. I really enjoy the long james intertwined in the song, and how the band pulls it back together in the end. -WALSTIB

Of the six Furthur songs debuted I enjoy “ The Mountain Song” the most as being fortunate to experience first played at Cuthbert Ampitheater Eugene,OR 9/17/10. The audience reaction and the band’s interplay and intensity stood out with passion. Thanks to Phil’s son Brian he took an obscure David Crosby song with mom Jill, found lryics from Robert Hunter to be added to the unfinfished song even the though the song past a half a dozen or so artists for development in forty plus years. Being a family thing which is a Grateful Dead tradtion I give my choice to “The Mountain Song“To quote Brian Lesh: ‘Music isn’t meant to be inert, it is meant to grow and change’ ; a perfect example of taking it Furthur.

Born Cross Eyed. A great leaping off point into wider spaces unknown.

Calling for your favorite, how can you. This band is playing with the intensity we the heads have been craving for. Furthur has bought out songs that had been missing for years. Phil and Bob are rocking with this new band. Listen to the playing of the young members, they sure know how to jam. Unbroken chain, The Eleven, Viola Lee, Where do you start? This band is a must see to really appreciate the mastery of great musicians. From jazzy to rockin they are on fire.

Alabama Getaway….Maybe I’m a little biased seeing as how I’m from Muscle Shoals, AL (birthplace of Donna Jean Godchaux)...“What’s this bout Alabame’ Keeps Coming Back to Me????” But I would have to say the song that gives me chills (and a few tears sometimes) would be Terrapin Station Suite..I flew out to Calaveras County from Alabama for the fest so I had the pleasure of hearing Furthur perform pretty much every song originally released as well as one hell of a soundcheck! See you guys at the Fabulous Fox in ATL.

Probably Viola Lee Blues > anyting > Viola (I am kind of cheating here, but you don’t see that many Violia Lee Blues that are stand alone. We missed the song so much in the Jerry daze, so once Phil brought it back and made it so jammy and twisty it became such a treat to see live again. Go check out the version from 2010-06-25 @ the Highland Bowl with the Betha & Cumberland stuck in the middle – its the fix my ears have been been jones-ing for,

I gotta go with Reuben and Cherise here and let me tell you why…first, the song itself – the story…I met my girl in New Orleans, she being from San Francisco and me being from Toronto and we are still going strong 7 years on…This is not an easy song to play and it requires the whole band to really be on to play it well. It has an easy gait and a few hooks…“Ruby, Ruby tell me truly true…” so sweet :)... I think The Dead only hit this one up like 4 times or so???? and it’s not found on a lot (any?) of the JGB official releases, so it’s hard to get a hold of a nice crisp live copy. With that being said, I consider it to be quite rare and a serious treat if it ever get presented to you. On Feb 20, 2010 in Utica, NY I was in luck. John sang the whole thing and when you closed your eyes….perfect. I keep coming back to that version…there’s a great recording on archive.org and I encourage everyone and anyone who either loves or perhaps is not all that familiar with the song to check that version out. Be careful though, it’s infectious! Cheers.
