Saturday Night Live paid an extensive tribute to Prince over the weekend with a special episode centered around The Purple One’s appearances on the show over the years, starting with his debut as a 22-year old in 1981.

An emotional Jimmy Fallon opened the show with a monologue to Prince. “Other people may have been on the show more times or performed more frequently, but there was always something different about a Prince performance,” he said. “It was special. It was an event. It was Prince.”

The next hour included tributes from the likes of Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph to some previously unreleased footage of Prince’s special appearance at the SNL 40th anniversary afterparty and much, much more.
