Watch: Stephen Colbert Sells Michael Stipe at Yard Sale

Rob Slater on December 18, 2014

Last night marked the penultimate episode of The Colbert Report and the host had some housecleaning to do as he readies to take over for David Letterman on CBS. In the “most American way possible,” Colbert held a yard sale to give away all of his priceless possessions, most of which went for about a dollar. One of the least coveted items was R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, who Colbert said had been sitting on his shelf for over three years (this also prompted a timely “Losing My Religion” reference). After initially listing the former frontman for 50 cents, he was promptly marked down to 25 cents.

While one quarter would get you a rock star, a dollar earned folks handwritten speeches, awards, statues of the host himself and of course, everyone’s favorite board game, Afghandyland. The Colbert Report comes to a close tonight on Comedy Central.
