A new clip of the forthcoming Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck has surfaced via The New York Times. In the clip, we hear Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic talking about the first time he met Kurt and how they initially bonded. “He’d aways have to do some kind of art, usually defacing something,” he said. Novoselic also credited their common love of punk rock as one of their initial bonding points.

Also included is some footage of an early, intimate Nirvana performance. A voiceover from Cobain features him explaining that all they needed was “an audience of two” to consider it a show.

In the NYT piece, director Brett Morgen also clarifies that there won’t be any Dave Grohl material in the film or in a DVD extra. Critics of the film have cited the lack of Grohl, meanwhile Krist Novoselic is prominently featured, much like in the clip below.

Montage of Heck is due out May 4 on HBO and will hit select theaters on April 24.
