Watch: Mickey Hart Joins Skrillex at Bonnaroo SuperJam

One of the most musically compelling moments of Skrillex’s SuperJam at this year’s Bonnaroo was the warped version of “Fire on the Mountain” with Mickey Hart, Skrillex, Big Gigantic, Warpaint and others all collaborating on stage. Now, in a newly released behind the scenes look at the collaboration, we get to hear from Hart, Skrillex, Jeremy Salken, Warpaint, A$AP Ferg and others about the unique performance. All of the artists share their affection to Hart, particularly A$AP Ferg who calls him a “real artist.” Emily Kokal of Warpaint also discusses her Grateful Dead fandom.

On stage, Hart actually rapped the tune for what Skrillex dubbed the “rap version” of “Fire on the Mountain.” As Hart says in the video, he did so with the inspiration from Jay Z’s original proclamation that the Grateful Dead were the original rappers. Another one of the interesting aspects of the behind the scenes look is the anticipation of the Grateful Dead fan reaction. “They’re opinionated,” says Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger. The performance ended up as one of the major highlights from the extensive, guest-filled SuperJam.

Watch a behind the scenes look at the performance and then watch the full performance all in the video below directed by Danny Clinch.
