Watch: Ernie Banks Joins Pearl Jam at Wrigley Field

Rob Slater on January 24, 2015

Yesterday the unfortunate news broke that Ernie Banks, Mr. Cub, passed away at the age of 83. Banks was a Hall of Famer, 11-time All-star and an ambassador for the Cubs organization in addition to his popular “Let’s Play Two” slogan. When Pearl Jam descended on Wrigley Field in 2013, the band did so with the help of Mr. Cub himself as Banks joined the band on stage following a seemingly endless rain delay that threatened to cancel the show. Frontman Eddie Vedder told a story about Ernie Banks urging the singer to write a song about the Cubs and Wrigley Field. So, the longtime Cubs fan got to it, leading to “All the Way,” a short acoustic number about the Cubs finally winning the World Series.

Following the performance, Banks joined the band on stage for the final singalong chorus and proceeded to brighten everyone’s day with his infectious positive attitude. “I’m so happy to see all of you here at my house,” Banks said to a rousing ovation from the crowd. He then revealed that he had Vedder’s glove that he brought to Wrigley Field the first time he visited the Friendly Confines when he was five years old.

In other Ernie Banks news, Chicago-based Umphrey’s McGee also paid tribute to the fallen legend on their Twitter. Most members of the band make their Cubs fandom no secret and the group has also previously sung the National Anthem at the famed ballpark in addition to Brendan Bayliss throwing out the first pitch.
