Watch: Billy Corgan Says Rock Music Needs to Be More ‘Aggressive’ in Taking on Pop Music

Alert: Billy Corgan has resurfaced. This time The Smashing Pumpkins frontman appeared in Australia on Channel 7’s The Morning Show and wasted no time diving into the Kanye West/Beck Grammys incident as well as why pop music is becoming a form of “pornography” and how Kurt Cobain would react to the current state of pop and rock music.

The hosts quickly shifted from his latest album Monuments to an Elegy to the Kanye West incident. “Kanye’s from Chicago so I gotta be careful,” Corgan wisely stated. “I think it’s inappropriate for any artist to take somebody else’s moment and make it their own.” He went on to say that he did think Kanye was speaking from the heart but did it at the inappropriate venue.

How about if Corgan were in Beck’s spot? “If someone got up on my stage I’d knock them out. I don’t care who it is. I would’ve knocked them out. That’s my stage.”

There is also a whole lot of jabber about the current state of pop music and how rock stars shouldn’t fraternize with those in the pop world. “Rock and roll will be fine, it just needs to be more aggressive in taking on pop music,” he said. “I think everybody belongs on their own side of the street for a reason. By definition, a rock star is supposed to be an independent individual who pursues a vision to an end–an Axel Rose, an Elton John. A pop star is supposed to do whatever they have to do to pray at some horrible idol of fame.”
