Video Premiere: Trampled By Turtles “Brown Eyed Women” from _Dear Jerry: Celebrating The Music of Jerry Garcia_

October 7, 2016

Back on May 14, 2015, dozens of celebrated musicians came together at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland to honor the memory of Jerry Garcia. On October 14 Rounder will release Dear Jerry: Celebrating The Music of Jerry Garcia, on Blu-ray, DVD, CD and digital download (it is now available for pre-order via the official Jerry Garcia store). The concert film extends over two hours, featuring 20 performances by such artists as  Phil Lesh & Communion, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann’s Billy & the Kids, Mickey Hart, Widespread Panic, Eric Church, Jimmy Cliff, Allen Toussaint, Grace Potter,  Peter Frampton, moe., The Disco Biscuits, David Grisman, Jorma Kaukonen, Los Lobos, Yonder Mountain String Band and O.A.R.

Today we premiere Trampled By Turtles’ version of “Brown-Eyed Women.” The group’s Erik Berry reflects, “Jerry Garcia has been a huge influence on many members of TBT–both as an electric and acoustic performer, and as a vocalist. However, it is an influence we didn’t put front and center for many years and we are grateful to Dear Jerry for encouraging us to revisit his work. ‘Brown Eyed Women’ was a cool choice because it’s one of those Hunter-Garcia tunes that sounds much older, much more classic, than a song written in the early 1970s. It’s a great fit for a string band. Our actual performance was a little nerve wracking. We’d actually worked up a really killer version of Touch of Grey only to learn 48 hours before show time that Bobby was doing it. So we had to learn BEW in a hurry. Then, right as we were walking out onstage, Bobby himself came walking off and telling us to do a good job–as a band of secret and not-so-secret Deadheads, this was both very encouraging and extremely surreal. However, the moment felt great and Dear Jerry was an amazing event to be a part of and having it immortalized in the release is an accomplishment we are all proud of. Thank you.”
