Video Premiere: The Bo-Keys “Learned My Lesson In Love”

July 20, 2016

Contemporary Memphis soul act The Bo-Keys draws heavily on the classic sounds of the region. The group recorded its latest record Heartaches by the Number on analog tape at Electraphonic Recording in Memphis, incorporating elements from the Memphis/Nashville/Muscle Shoals palate. The core band, which was founded by bassist/producer Scott Bomar, includes renowned drummer Howard Grimes (Al Green), horn players Marc Franklin and Art Edmaiston of the Gregg Allman Band, saxophonist Kirk Smothers, organist Al Gamble, and guitarist Joe Restivo. The new record features vocals from Percy Wiggins, who first gained renown in the 1960’s recording with future Band of Gypsies members Billy Cox and Larry Lee.

Today we premiere the official video for “Learned My Lesson In Love.” The video was directed by Tyler Russell. Earlier this year The Bo-Keys recorded the original score for Russell’s film Here Comes Rusty  which stars Col. Bruce Hampton, Fred Willard and Joey Lauren Adams. Russell returned the favor a few weeks after the film wrapped, traveling to Memphis to shoot the video.

Scott Bomar tells Relix, “The video captures a day in the life of our band on a humid, Memphis summer day. We go by my recording studio, Electraphonic Recording where we recorded the new album, visit our drummer, Howard “Bulldog” Grimes (member of Hi Rhythm Section who played w/ Al Green) and take a stroll down Beale St. where we run into our keyboard player Archie “Hubbie” Turner and our friends Leroy Hodges (Hi Rhythm Section), Eric Lewis who played pedal steel on our new album and Memphis bluesman, Earl “the Pearl” Banks.

“The video culminates with us performing at the legendary Levitt Shell (http://www.levittshell.org/shell-artists/) where Elvis Presley performed his first professional show as well as shows in the 70s by seminal acts such as the Allman Brothers, Booker T & the MGs, Big Star and ZZ Top. It is always really special to perform there and I think the video captures that.  Performing with us that night were Memphis Soul luminaries Don Bryant, (Hi Records), Spencer Wiggins (Fame Studio Artist), Susan Marshall (Cat Power, Primal Scream, Lucinda Williams) and Reba Russell who make all make cameo appearances. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it !”
