Video: Outkast Reunite At Coachella For First Performance in Nearly a Decade

Andre 3000 and Big Boi played festival one of forty last night as the Atlanta duo graced the stage for the first time in nearly a decade as the headliner of Coachella’s opening night. Hitting the stage at exactly 11:30 PM, Outkast played a 27-song set that included guest appearances from Janelle Monae, Sleepy Brown, Future and a teaser guest spot from Killer Mike.

Kicking things off with a slew of hits including “B.O.B.,” “Gasoline Dreams,” “ATLiens” and “Rosa Parks,” it seemed like nothing could possibly go wrong. However, due to issues with his monitor and a seemingly lackluster (or tired) crowd, Andre 3000 didn’t seem all too pleased throughout the show, referencing the “haters” in the crowd on several occasions. The decision to sprinkle in material from the group’s least cohesive record, Speakerboxxx/The Love Bellow, also could’ve contributed to the lukewarm reception. When it came time for the “hits” at the end of the set, it felt as if the duo were trying to rush through them to end the show. Little did we know, they were up against the clock, and at 1 AM local time, the festival cut them off. Luckily for those there to see the hits, they had rolled through “So Fresh So Clean,” “The Way You Move” and “Hey Ya!”

Andre 3000 apologized to the crowd, saying that he “knows it’s kinda weird, twenty years later and everything,” but that they would see the crowd next weekend. With the first show jitters out of the way, expect a more cohesive set from the Boys of Summer next week as they play Coachella again. Watch the full set below and judge for yourself. The first hour is a realization of all those butterflies you felt in your stomach when you saw the popular Atlanta duo were getting back together. The next 30 minutes is clunky and awkward, but it’s a good start regardless.
