Video: Jack White Talks with Dan Rather, Takes Shots at Rolling Stone and Foo Fighters in Boston

Yes, it’s that time again. Time for your weekly Jack White update! This time, the Lazaretto rocker comes at us in a couple of forms. The first is a fascinating, hour-long interview with the legendary Dan Rather where they rap about all aspects of the guitarist’s life both past, present and future.

Of note, White discusses his decision to leave Detroit for Nashville, citing the “cynical” attitude of the people that surrounded him, particularly during the rise of The White Stripes. “They’re very cynical about things such as what was happening to me and Meg and the White Stripes when we were breaking into the mainstream. Our music was getting out to a lot more people. It was very hard for people around to understand how to relate to it,” he said.

White appeared uncomfortable when Rather then asked him if the cynicism had anything to do with the discovery that Meg and Jack were exes. White explained, “No one had any problem with her; they had a problem with me because I’m very extroverted. If you try to be extroverted in a small town of 10,000 people for example, you can’t do that.”

The interview, shot at White’s beautiful Third Man Records facility, also covers the success of his Ultra Lazaretto LP which smashed the record for vinyl sales as well as his vision for the company moving forward. White and Rather also dish on their favorite rock, country and blues tunes and the interview closes with White playing a bit of Hank Williams’ “Tennessee Border.”

The second is just how we like Mr. White to be: totally unfiltered. Last night during his show at Boston’s Fenway Park’s Bleacher Theatre, the guitarist took some time to air some of his grievances with Rolling Stone. As you may recall, White delivered a similar speech at Bonnaroo where he called the magazine a “tabloid.” Last night was much of the same as White went off on the magazine, saying it was “brought to you by the Kardashian family” and even called out Jann Wenner, Rolling Stone‘s founder.

He also took a clean shot at the Foo Fighters for “covering up their mistakes” with a second guitarist (the Foo Fighters responded on Twitter and White released a statement below). White hilariously ends the speech with a nod to his fellow Bonnaroo headliner, Kanye West, saying that he should stop now because “this is officially becoming a Kanye West-esque rant.”

This concludes your weekly Jack White update. Watch replays of both happenings below.

Dan Rather Interview

Rolling Stone Rant

Update: Foo Fighters tweeted an interesting response to the dig from Mr. White….

Update #2: Jack White issues a statement telling the Internet what they (should) already know–it was a joke all in good fun.

Dear dream-makers of the media….

Last night Jack White made a joke on stage!

There was a minor equipment mishap, specifically with his guitar, and in an effort to keep his audience engaged, he made a joke! It was meant to be funny and self deprecating: “hey sorry, you’re stuck with just me up here…” vs the Foo Fighters who have three guitar players on stage and regularly play stadium shows.

Jack has the upmost respect for the Foo Fighters and communicated with Grohl this morning.

So if you’ll let us, we’ll all continue with our day and we assure you: All is well in the rock n roll world.
