Video: Arcade Fire Talk Early Beginnings, Rock Status on _CBS Sunday Morning_

October 20, 2014

CBS Sunday Morning profiled Arcade Fire over the weekend. The footage, shot ahead of the band’s shows at Barclays Arena (and featuring clips from the show), includes Win Butler and Regine Chassagne delving into the history of the band from their early days in Montreal crafting the classic Funeral to their now current arena rock status.

Highlights include Win and Regine taking host Anthony Mason to their Montreal apartment where most of the band’s stellar debut Funeral was recorded. Chassagne even goes on to recreate the room at the time they were recording “Wake Up.” The multi-instrumentalist’s memory and ability to retain music is stunning throughout, as she recalls a time during the Neon Bible sessions when she woke up in the middle of the night with an intense headache. “I realized I was playing (Arcade Fire’s song) ‘Black Mirror’ in my head, backwards.” BACKWARDS.

The profile closes with Butler giving his thoughts on Arcade Fire as a rock band compared to the typical rock band persona. “We never have drugs in our band. I just have no interest. We’ve read the rock biographies,” the frontman says. “I find it embarassing, it’s like seeing a drunk Santa Claus or something like that.”
