Umphrey’s McGee’s Jake Cinninger Swims in a Sea of Guitars, Previews Mashup Album ‘ZONKEY’

October 20, 2016

If you want to get Umphrey’s McGee axeman Jake Cinninger on camera for an interview, best to lure him in with a bunch of guitars. Reverb.com had the right idea, as they recruited Cinninger to sample some of the band’s new mashup album ZONKEY on a bunch of different guitars.

Cinninger digs into the “Strangletage” mashup, which pits Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold” with Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage.” “It was kind of a lustful record for us,” Cinninger says. “It was so much fun in the studio.” Cinninger dives deep into the molecular makeup of the mashup as he plays it, saying he likes the “Stranglehold” riff in G to make it sound better with the “Sabotage” rhythm.

“I remember being a teenager cruising dirt roads in the backseat with my friends listening to that solo,” he says of Nugent’s “Stranglehold,” noting that it was fun to personally fulfill that childhood memory in the studio. There is a whole lot more guitar porn and plenty of geeky factoids from the ultimate guitar geek.
