Seven of Our Favorite Moments From Grand Point North

September 18, 2013

Grace Potter and The Nocturnals held their second annual Grand Point North Festival at The Waterfront in Burlington, VT. The two-day festival featured two nights of GPN along with Gov’t Mule, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, City & Colour, The Felice Brothers, and many more. Collaborations were the norm over the two days in Burlington, as Grace not only welcomed the likes of Kenny Chesney (who flew in on Saturday to surprise the singer), Warren Haynes and Trombone Shorty to the stage, but also roamed the festival grounds herself, joining Gov’t Mule during their set.

Unique to Grand Point North was the first annual Grand Point Dead after-show, a full set featuring Grateful Dead tunes. The band featured Benny Yurco (guitar) from The Nocturnals as well as Dave Diamond (guitar), Adam King (keys), Pat May (bass), Steve Hadeka (drums) and Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro also on drums. Keeping with the theme of the weekend, many guests stopped by including Grace Potter, Scott Tournet, and Matt Burr from The Nocturnals as well as Warren Haynes and John Rogone on guitar and bass, respectively. Here are seven of our favorite moments from this past weekend in Vermont including multiple cuts from Grand Point Dead.

Trombone Shorty has a way of effortlessly injecting energy into a performance, and that skill is on full display here with this pulse-pounding version of GPN’s hit “Paris” from their 2010 self-titled album. Joined by two of his horn players from Orleans Avenue, Trombone Shorty takes the fiery “Paris” to new heights.

Kenny Chesney flew in Saturday night, much to the surprise of Grace and the band. Chesney and Potter recently collaborated on “You and Tequila” which ended up on Chesney’s 2010 album Hemingway’s Whiskey. The two took the stage once again at Grand Point North to perform “You and Tequila” as well as a take on Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire.” Check out the excellent vocal contrast between the two that gives life to this delicate Springsteen ballad.

Very few times, if ever, have Grace Potter and Warren Haynes not collaborated when finding themselves on the same festival grounds. As Grace remarks at the beginning of this video, “it’s just not the same without you.” Warren and Grace found themselves on stage together a few times this weekend (more on that later) but this time Warren lent his guitar to “2:22,” the broody and bluesy number from GPN’s 2005 debut album Nothing But the Water. Grace mimics her vocal pattern with Warren’s guitar, making this performance as soaring and noisy as they come.

Moving onto the Grand Point Dead portion of the list, there was no one performance better than this take on “Sugaree” featuring Warren Haynes. Nocturnals guitarist Benny Yurco played the role of Jerry and Warren followed along as the band created a nearly fifteen-minute rendition that featured some worthy improvisation. Enjoy.

A new staple at Grace Potter & The Nocturnals shows, “Friend of the Devil” benefits from the soulful vocals of Potter and thoughtful playing of Yurco and Tournet. All three found themselves on this version at Grand Point Dead, delivering yet another stellar performance.

Tournet and Potter stayed out for the Grateful Dead “hit” “Casey Jones” towards the end of the set. With everybody lending vocals to the performance led to a full singalong between band and crowd.

And finally, the finale, which featured a host of musicians joining GPN on stage during the final encore of the weekend for a take on the Spencer Davis/Steve Winwood collaboration “Gimme Some Lovin’.” This performance also led into a brief snippet of “Cocaine” before exiting the stage.
