Richard Hell Delivers Delightfully Weird Version of “Purple Rain”

New York’s City Winery hosted a very special benefit for Ivan Julian, the former guitarist for Richard Hell and the Voidoids who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Among those who appeared last night included Debbie Harry, who acted as MC for the evening. Vernon Reid, Ian Hunter, Lenny Kaye, Garland Jeffreys, post-punk vets Bush Tetras and The Dictators, Richard Barone and Julian’s former bandmate Richard Hell, who made a rare live appearance to support his friend.

The night was filled with covers, stories and tributes from the various guests as they joined the house band that included members of the Patti Smith Group and others. To close the show, Hell came out to lead the ensemble on a tribute to Prince with a perfectly fittingly weird take on “Purple Rain.”
