Relive Tom Waits’ Final Appearance on ‘Late Show with David Letterman’

December 7, 2016

David Letterman and Tom Waits have had a number of run-ins over the years, with Waits’ first appearance dating all the way back to 1983. And today, as Waits turns 67, what better way to celebrate one of the most prolific singer-songwriters than to revisit his final appearance on a show that has spanned most of his musical life.

With just one week to retirement, Letterman welcomed the longtime guest on the show for one last chat and performance. In typical Waits fashion, the conversation veered to his new scent he’s working on for Letterman called “Hard Work,” a scent to give off the impression you’ve been working hard. There are various other musings, all the while George Clooney is handcuffed to Letterman in protest of his impending retirement.

It’s a perfectly Tom Waits appearance on Letterman’s show, and a fitting send-off capped by the new song “Take One Last Look.” Watch below.
