N.C. State Uses Odd Rolling Stones Reference to Sell Football Tickets; Band Uses Mascot without Permission

The Rolling Stones’ show at N.C. State University on July 1 featured a series of non-musical lowlights from both sides. Starting with the above photo, the university took full advantage of the rock legends playing in their stadium by using a lyric from “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” as a tagline to help sell football tickets.

This is a problem on many levels. Forgetting the fact that it doesn’t exactly make a ton of sense from an advertising standpoint, N.C. State’s home football schedule is absolutely abysmal. It really is not what you want if you’re looking to enjoy your Saturday’s in the fall. If what you want is to see N.C. State play Eastern Kentucky and Troy, then by all means, treat yourself.

It doesn’t get much better from there as the band themselves had a misstep of their own. As Indy Week reports, the Brit rockers sold a really neat looking shirt featuring the Wolfpack’s mascot “Tuffy” mashed up with the Stones’ iconic tongue logo. This is a strong idea from their merch team, Bravado USA, if they only sought permission from the school to use the logo.

A rep from the university says the band asked to use a modified version of Tuffy to drive ticket sales online and through advertisements, but the deal didn’t allow for the graphic on merchandise, which also appeared on towels, uniforms and shirts. A resolution is currently being worked out.

As if things couldn’t get any worse, the band brought out Duke University’s choir to play on the very song that was turned into an advertisement. Surely, the Wolfpack faithful (and UNC, Wake Forest and everyone else who hates Duke–so, everyone) enjoyed a rival school’s choir on stage with the biggest rock band in the world. Watch the performance below.
