Listen to a Nearly 20-Minute “Cities” from Phish’s Last Visit to Minneapolis

June 22, 2016

Phish returns to the road tonight for their first show in Minnesota since they laid down this particular number at the Target Center in 2000. Now, they’ll return to the Twin Cities, gracing the stage at the Xcel Energy Center, which coincidentally opened in 2000.

Last time Phish visited Minnesota they were staring what would become their first of two hiatuses in the face as they neared the home stretch of a 21-show tour. That didn’t mean the group was out of gas, as they were still capable of blowing out tunes like the “Cities” below, which nearly touched the 20-minute mark and ranks as one of the finest versions of the song ever played.

The September 24, 2000 show is also notable for the first take on The Velvet Underground’s “Cool it Down” since it debuted on Halloween in 1998. The particularly cover-heavy show also featured takes on “Mellow Mood,” “Ya Mar” and “Fire.” Listen to the “Cities” below.
