Let’s Revisit Many of the Great Musical Moments at Wrigley Field

Rob Slater on October 28, 2016

Tonight, something will happen at Wrigley Field that hasn’t happened in 71 years. The World Series will be played there, as the Cubs bring a tied series against the Indians to their Friendly Confines hoping to accomplish something that hasn’t happened in 108 years, a Cubs World Series title.

What has happened in the last few years is a slew of marquee concerts taking over center field, just in front of the famed Wrigley scoreboard. Jimmy Buffett played the inaugural shindig in 2005 and since then, the likes of Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Roger Waters, Billy Joel, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Phish and many others have graced the stage.

As the stadium readies for a historic night, look back on a few other historic musical moments from the park’s history.

Elton John and Billy Joel | July 16 & 21, 2009
Two of the world’s most famous pianists teamed up for one of the more unique collaborative tours we’ve seen, exchanging short co-headlining sets for a truly immersive experience, as both took on the other’s catalog. Watch “Piano Man” from the July 21 show at the Friendly Confines, just its fifth concert ever.

Dave Matthews Band | September 17 & 18, 2010

Dave Matthews Band have been known to dabble in the baseball stadium show, visiting Busch Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park, Nationals Park and many others over the years. To close out their 2010 summer tour, the group staked claim to the ivy for two nights in late September, ultimately immortalizing the shows with their Live at Wrigley Field album. Check out “The Last Stop” from the final night.

Paul McCartney | July 31 & August 1, 2011

You’re not official until a Beatle graces your stage, so maybe Paul McCartney’s two-night run in the summer of 2011 started the turnaround for the Cubs and is just manifesting itself now. Or it’s all those big contracts they handed out. Either/or.

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band | September 7 & 8, 2012

“Atlantic City”
“Darkness on the Edge of Town”
Bruce Springsteen shows are always a spectacle, and stadium shows certainly bring out the best in The Boss. During his visit to Wrigley in 2012, he got some help from Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder on both nights, along with fellow Cubs fan Tom Morello. Check out “Atlantic City” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town” with Vedder from both nights of the run.

Phish
After playing Fenway Park in 2009, Phish made their Wrigley Field debut earlier this summer with two nights in June highlighted by a roaring tribute to David Bowie and the return of “Fluffhead” after a two-year hiatus.

Pearl Jam

It’s only fitting this whole thing ends with Pearl Jam, a band led by one of the biggest Cubs fans out there. One who was sitting next to Theo Epstein when the team clinched the National League pennant and then went down into the locker room for a beer shower. Eddie Vedder’s professed love for the team aside, Pearl Jam has graced the stage at Wrigley three times (Billy Joel holds the lead at 5), most recently playing two nights in August.

Their first visit to Wrigley was about as cursed as the baseball team that calls it home, with a three-hour weather delay forcing the band to leave the stage just seven songs into the show. They’d return and play up to the venue’s mandatory 2 AM curfew, ultimately delivering 26 more songs and welcoming Cubs legend Ernie Banks on stage in the process.

Three years later they’d return and, in the spirit of the late Banks, play two at Wrigley with no weather delays. Watch a couple of highlights below including the Banks appearance and another special guest, longtime fan of the band and former Chicago Bull Dennis Rodman.
