Last Time at the Gorge, Phish Howled at the Moon and Busted Open “Sneakin’ Sally”

As Phish readies to return to the iconic Gorge Amphitheatre tonight for the first time since 2013 to signal the start of their west coast run (REMINDER: The shows will be webcast), it’s a good time to look back on their last visit to Washington which yielded a number of highlights.

Among them, a scorching first night that saw Trey Anastasio finally don a Russell Wilson shirt after the hometown Seattle Seahawks used “Wilson” to introduce their starting quarterback. “Wilson” was played in the first set that night as well.

To close the second set, Phish came out of “Rocky Top” with a unique “Character Zero” as Anastasio signaled for LD Chris Kuroda to kill the lights on stage so the band can check out the moon. “A ‘Moon Jam,'” Anastasio joked into the mic. From there, the lights went down and the members of the band began howling at the moon hanging above the venue. All in all, a thrilling end to a set that touched on just about every one of Phish’s strengths.

For the July 27th finale, it was “Sneakin’ Sally” that stole the show out of a “Light” jam as Anastasio called for the favorite Allen Toussaint cover and it did not disappoint as the tune stayed largely Type I but featured the guitarist taking control for a rocking version after a funk section. From there, the group led into “2001” and a rocking finish to the show.

Relive both of those moments below.
