Joe Russo’s Almost Dead kicked off the annual Freak’s Ball at the Brooklyn Bowl last night. The ensemble, which includes Joe Russo along with Marco Benevento, Tom Hamilton, Dave Dreiwitz and Scott Metzger, delivered fifteen debuts last night as they pulled from the depths of the Grateful Dead’s catalog. Notable performances included “Alice D. Millionaire,” a rare Dead tune only performed a few times in 1966 as well as notable takes on “Black Peter,” “Big Railroad Blues,” “Mississippi Half-Step,” “Sugar Magnolia” and others.
