Here’s a Few Times Brendan Bayliss Has Covered Pearl Jam

Rob Slater on July 9, 2015

Tonight in Chicago, Brendan Bayliss will team up with fellow Cubs fan and Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder (and members of Wilco, Cheap Trick and other Chicago musicians) for the Hot Stove Cool Music Chicago benefit show at Chicago’s Metro, organized by Cubs President Theo Epstein to benefit his Foundation to Be Named Later. There’s no telling who will play what with who, as it’s rumored that Vedder will front a band that features Epstein, baseball writer Peter Gammons and Cubs broadcaster Len Kasper, but here’s to hoping that Bayliss gets to share some stage time with Vedder, as the UM frontman has some experience with Vedder’s songwriting.

Pearl Jam crowd-favorite “Release” is the longest running PJ cover in the Umphrey’s catalog, dating all the way back to 2002, however it has only been played 12 times. “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” made a singular appearance at Brendan and Jake’s Holiday Acoustic show, with Bayliss busting out the mandolin to complement Cinninger on acoustic guitar. Finally, at the band’s UMBowl in 2013, fans voted on a cover of Pearl Jam’s “Porch” in the second quarter. The tune has been played a few times following its debut.

Watch a selection of all three tunes below and stay tuned tomorrow to see how it all shakes out.
