Glastonbury Posts Message Following Britain’s Vote to Leave European Union

June 24, 2016

Today those at one of the world’s most famous festivals, Glastonbury, awoke to find out the news that Britain has voted to leave the European Union, which sent the country’s economy into a spiral and has sparked reaction from various outlets.

Artists have voiced their opinions from the stage today during the festival, which continues throughout the weekend, as Damon Albarn reportedly said from the stage, “I have a heavy heart today. Democracy has failed us, because we were ill-informed.”

The festival responded by posting the above message across the campgrounds in the form of a poem from Jodi Bickley. “As this country is divided, in this field we belong,” the poem reads. It closes with “We’ll miss you a lot, our little mate the EU.”

Read it in full below.

Everyone is repeating they have no words,
But we’re full of them.
As the camp wakes to the news,
Tents come alive with profanity,
It can’t be true, can it, really?
It is.
It’s a day none of us have felt less British.
As those around is crack open breakfast wine and shout for revolt.
I think we’re pretty safe in the knowledge that it’s nobody’s here fault.
So let’s trudge through the mud,
And sing out loud our protest songs.
As the country is divided–in this field we belong,
Embrace your fellow Glastonberry,
As they are feeling just like you,
Goodbye old friend,
We’ll miss you a lot,
Our little mate the EU
