Speedway Meadow, Golden Gate Park
April 22, 2007
San Francisco, CA
It was Earth Day in San Francisco, and the earth obliged, cutting a
clear-eyed blue sky with only a whisper of fog off the nearby Pacific
Ocean. Bob Marley tunes cut with hip-hop funk, Grateful Dead tunes with
reggae mixed in, Sammy Hagar growling for the green cause—so the West
Coast edition of the (disclaimer alert!) Relix-co-sponsored Green Apple Fest peaked, back where it all began, with a free show in Golden Gate Park.

Bowery Ballroom, NYC
Prefuse 73 set the stage, warming up the crowd for Battles’ first headlining performance at New York’s Bowery Ballroom. The tables were turned tonight, as Battles usually performs as Prefuse 73’s opener. It is unclear whether the majority of the audience was there for Battles or Prefuse, but as the balcony and floor both seemed a bit roomier after the latter’s set ended, a substantial crowd remained as Battles began.

Irving Plaza, NYC
Saturday, March 24, 2007
It’s a beautiful and exciting thing to watch an up-and-coming band.
It’s twice as exciting to see two rising acts sharing the same bill.
Tea Leaf Green held a headlining spot at the newly dubbed Fillmore East
at Irving Plaza with New York City natives U-Melt. It’s usually a rare
occurrence when an opening act almost fills a venue. U-Melt provided
for one of these rare opportunities, bringing the crowd in early to get
the night started.

Grey Eagle, Asheville, NC
Wednesday, March 14, 2007
Texas instrumental post-rock outfit Explosions in the Sky composes each album classically, as one great work consisting of a series of movements. The movements are executed with three guitars and a set of drums. Without words, they take us on a deeply existential, sometimes fantastic journey. And so it went with the band at Asheville’s Grey Eagle, a down-to-earth, personable rock venue.

The Living Room, New York, NY
Sunday, March 18, 2007
Joe Purdy is working on carving himself out a niche in the young
singer/songwriter scene. To add to his growing popularity, Purdy
recently made an appearance playing with Who guitarist Pete Townshend
in Chicago and is set to begin a European tour. With eight albums under
his belt, Purdy is currently touring in support of his latest release,
Canyon Joe. The intimate setting at the Living Room was packed to
capacity, and a few fans left at the end of the line even had to talk
the door man into letting them in for the performance.
