Bill Kreutzmann in Kauai 9/25/02 Print E-mail

Mahalo for your coverage of the Grateful Dead Family “Reunion” as told by Blair Jackson’s excellent article. I would like to clarify the description of Billy Kreutzman’s Kauai hiatus, which was described as dropping out of sight and playing occasionally with Backbone, a local bar band. For lack of better venues, Bill did play our bars, but they were definitely shake your booty events. The band was actually called House of Spirits and they laid down some very nice tunes (original as well as Dead covers). One difference between the old big-time shows and the Kauai gigs was that you could easily saunter up and grok Bill dancing through the numbers from five feet away. And though we are glad he is reunited with the Others (really the Dead, as he says), what a sweet treat it was to hear his talent in relative isolation. Haven’t been that close since the 1977 Bakersfield show in a 1/4 filled gymnasium (Bill Graham gave away tickets for that one at the end of the Santa Barbara no-nuke show). Bill is a fabulous drummer. Coming from a band built around an icon like Jerry and with Mickey’s effervescent world beat sound it might be tempting to overlook his talent. The Kauai shows allowed us a first hand experience of his excellence. Thanks, Bill.

I was just wondering when Wookiefoot was going to get mentioned by your magazine. Although I know little about them myself, I will admit that they had one of the most enjoyable performances of the summer up at Scottypaluzza this year. They have such a funky and original vibe to them (one which I'm sure is better live than on an album, although I think that of most bands), and they deserve to get noticed. The performance included many styles of music from old school rap (think beastie boys) to jamband style to funk to reggae to techno. It was really just amazing. And the fact that they had oompah loompahs running around the audience, as well as a 30 minute fire dance as a pause in their performance, which featured about half the group members (about 15 people) spinning balls of fire around each other, definitely says something about stage presence, and what a band can really do to an audience. Well, I just wanted to send you a note about this memorable band and the performance that set the stage for a perfect summer. Thanks.

Grateful Dawg 9/9 Print E-mail

A few quick words about the great coverage Relix continues to provide to trained musical ears. I applaud your efforts on the jambands circuit, while still maintaining a baby-boomer audience with your updates on The Other Ones. Also, to anyone who has not see Grateful Dawg (Sony Classic Pictures) yet, this intimate look at the relationship between David Grisman and Jerry Garcia should have been heralded more. The live footage from Grisman's Christmas parties are surreal, and the synergy created when Joe Craven enters the mix should impress even the staunchest of bluegrass critics. Check it out. A must see. Thanks and remember to "Live while you're young," no matter how old you are.

Kindness to others 8/19/02 Print E-mail

Having recently come home from the Fiddler's Music Fest I was moved beyond words by amazing sets put on by Spearhead, Angelique Kidjo and half of Ben Harper's set, when my friends and I were overwhlemed by inconsiderate fans yakking on cell phones waiting for Widespread to hit the stage....I love all kinds of music and the wide spectrum of people that come to these events. By the time Ben Harper had finished his set we had asked 8--count'em 8--people to be quiet... All I'm asking is for people to be aware of their fellow listener. If you are willing to pay 50 bucks to see only one band on an incredible bill, fine, but don't be disruptive to fans around; nobody wants to hear about your potato salad recipe. We came to vibe on great music. Please be Aware. Thanks for all the music... Stay Human.
