Van Der Graaf Generator 12/19/02 Print E-mail

Hey there, I'm writing because I think it'd be nice for Relix to do an article on one of the most adventurous, truly experimental rock bands of all time, Britain's Van Der Graaf Generator. In England (and Europe in general) there's been a rebirth of interest in the group (with major articles in recent issues of MOJO, Record Collector, UNCUT, etc.) and their lead singer, Peter Hammill, just played three sold-out concerts at Hammersmith's Lyric Theatre (and garnered an excellent review in The Wire). This is a band (and man) that Dead fans should know about.

Who? 11/29/02 Print E-mail

This is in response to the recent article about The Who being the worst geriatric tour this summer. I have a big problem with the whole article, because I went to the Who show at the tweeter center on July 27th this summer, and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I don't know if the show you went to was worse, but in Philadelphia all of the reviews of the show were in praise of it. I thought that considering that they only had 2 remaining original members of the band, John Entwistle passing away just before the start of the tour, they still played a miraculous show. Its not that I'm just a Who junkie or anything either, I am a fan of so many different bands, my favorite is moe.(haha just thought I would throw that in there). Although The Who were trying to make money, its not like that was the only reason they went on tour, I don't understand how you can enough-already when so many people wanted to see them play. There are a million different bands that you could say are just touring in their old age to make money, but in my opinion I think they are just trying to get a few last shows in before they are too old to play, although some bands are too old to play but not The Who. I have friends that went to Yes, Bob Dylan, and Peter Frampton recently and they said that all those bands were far too old to still be playing and the music was awful, but everybody I've talked to that saw The Who agrees with me that it was incredible. I just wanted to give another opinion on the issue, not start any major arguments or anything.

Paul McCartney 11/29/02 Print E-mail

First off I have to say that I am disappointed in the negative response to last month's article. Dave Matthews Band is full of good musicians and the fact that they are, "mainstream," doesn't make them less of a band. Was the Dead worse because Touch Of Gray became a hit? Secondly, I have to disagree with your choice of Paul McCartney in the, "Worst Geriatric Tour," section of the Best & Worst of 2002 article. I saw Paul in DC and the show was amazing. I agree the prices were steep, but unlike The Who, McCartney is in it for reason other then money. Paul and his wife give boat loads of money to numerous charities and use their fame and money to help the worldand many of its people. It'd be nice if all shows were low cost like the recent Other Ones tour, but just because someone is making money and, or has a lot of it, doesn't take away from the artist's abilities/music or good intentions.

Van Morrison 11/19 Print E-mail

Over the last few years I have become a very big fan of many of the artists covered in Relix. I have been a Dylan fan for years and by chance saw Phil and Friends on the same bill in New Haven. From there I became a fan of Warren Haynes(Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule) and from there Widespread Panic, Stringcheese, Robert Randolph and Derek Trucks not to mention a number of others. I have always been a big music fan and Springsteen's music still hits me right in the soul. But untill I saw Phil that night I never had actually listened to music in the way that I do now with only one other exception, and I mention this in hopes that some folks may hear what I hear in his music and appreciate the depth and pure energy his music brings and that artist is Van Morrison. I would never expect that he would be covered at any great lenght in Relix but a tid bit here or there might let a few folks appreciate a "new" artist to there lives. In my busy life of trying to be a good husband and father I allow myself really only one true luxury, and that is to enjoy the music that makes me want to dance , sing, cry , soul search , and share. What a kick it is to have your kids ask to hear "that coconut song" (WSP) or to hear them sing along to "where's my mule, wheres my forty acres" while dancing without a care in the living room. I love your magazine and the music from those artists covered in it. Thanks to all of you.
