Carter Beauford vs. Stanton Moore? 01/14/03 Print E-mail

Dear Relix, This is a response to the letter written by Joshua Mintz in your February-March issue. First of all, your judgment that your peers bash Dave Matthews Band is a reasonable observation. I’m proud to be in those ranks. And you think we do it because we want to be “cool”? Well, yeah, mom always did tell me telling the truth would make me cool. The point is, Dave Matthews doesn’t have any place in a magazine who’s slogan reads: “Music for the mind.” His songs are popular because they have a popish hook and mediocre musicianship that sounds pleasing to the musically ignorant. It plays well to the MTV crowd. And as for your opinion that Carter Beauford is one of the best drummers around, I’ve got one name for you (although there are many others): Stanton Moore. Check out his solo albums or live with Galactic. If Beauford excites you, Moore will be like an earth-shattering orgasm to your ears.

I just would like to suggest that someone somwhere in time covers Moonboot Lover but more importantly Peter Prince. As a programming director of my University in Upstate New York this year I got to meet Peter for the first time and also see him perform solo without the rest of Moonboot Lover. Let me tell you Peter Prince was amazing and such a great guy too. I've never met someone so down to earth and nice. He definately bridged a gap and turned many peoples heads. He opened for Tim Reynolds (who is too freaky and I wouldn't recommend seeing him live unless you're a Metallica fan or something of that Genre). But back to Peter Prince, he really opened a door for jambands at our university and provided many people to hear a true jamband all because he opened for a guitarist that everyone thought would just play Dave Matthews Songs.

I am disspaointed with the readers of Relix. These are the same people who would attend a breakthrough performance of the Dead and then walk out complaining it was lame. 1. Soulshine is Gov't Mule's best song period. Next your fans will say Terrapin Station is the most annoying Dead song. 2. Trey Anastaio's solo album is considered by many people to be one of the best things Trey has ever recorded inclusing PHISh. I've yet to have a person not like and I've told over 20 people to buy it who all love. This again proves that no matter how "Open Minded" and "Outrageous" our scene claims to be, comformity rules that day. Anything that doesn't sound like one of Jerrys licks or a howdown is crap. I think Bluegrass and country is mostly unlistenable and this magazine supports a lot of bad music like that, but I still wouldn't call Leftover Salmon the worst band of the year and they can't hold a card to Trey. WAKE UP. THE TIME HAS COME FOR YOU TO BE ALIVE AGAIN.

I'm a frequent reader of your magazine and I first of all have to say I'm sooo happy to have discovered it. No other magazine like it, you guys rock! Anyways on to my point. You guys featured DMB in your Oct/Nov issue and seems to me got a bad vibe from readers. (as seen in this months dec/jan issue's Dear Relix) Well I want to give my say. When I found out DMB was on the cover I was overwhelmed with JOY! DMB is one of my fave bands of all time. I cherish them, i've seen them live many many times and can't get over it. I for one hate all they're singles and radio songs but am so into the deeper meaning they're old stuff, songs most non-hardcore fans havent heard. Most of the people who wrote in to you bashing them probably have only heard DMB's singles, which to me are pretty shitty. I found you guys got deep into DMB and made me a bigger fan, realizing how wonderful they really are. I thought it would show people that they're not just a million dollar making band but a really talented group who puts together something so unique and wonderful, something i just can't get enough of. I for one am into the exact same bands as half those people. All the oldies like the Dead, Allman Bros, Dylan and such and the rising ones liek SCI, moe. Widespread (not so rising), Gov't Mule and ALL the bands at Bonnaroo. Anywyas what I'm trying to say is, you guys did an awesome job on that article and I am so grateful you did no matter how many people discriminated it. THANK YOU! from me and my dmb community :) Have a good one. Peace and keep the good stuff coming!
