allright first of all last months letter section was
kind of dishearting the first entire letters section
was filled with letters from the most agro people
that attend shows, you all know them thyere the ones
on tour who miracle as many tickets as they can just
to sell them to people for a 100 bucks just to pay for
their partying outside the show. The funny thing is
everytime you actually leave a mindblowing show these
same negative people are the ones who say yeah well we
were partying like crazy near the fence behind that
other fence 500 yards away and everyone of us that
heard it thought it blew. that terrapin was so weak
trey totally killed it.dude the terrapin from the one
dead show i saw when i was outside this show passed
out near the back lawn on the highway was 10 times
phatter dude jerry was playing like a car dude at one
point you could hear his guitar honk. This guy is the
same type of dude that asks you if you want acid after
the damn show.. yeah thats what i need to do go back
to my red roof and get spun and watch infomercals
untill set it and froget is the answer to all of lifes mysteries and i think its the cops when the pizza guy comes. basicaly theres been to much negative responses towards to music lately that i think the only answer is these people who rip apart every show should all start a band together and after each show talk about how bad it sucked or how the new orleans show was even worse. guys lighten up on the hate or do something about if you start up a better band hey who kows we could start talking about how much you

I'd like to address another point related to
people being close-minded. Fans of Phish, The Grateful Dead and WSP, who
are in general condsidered open-minded people, put down Dave Matthews and
other similar artists just as Daniel out of Atlanta said. I have heard many
a Phish kid talk bad about WSP, and how they don't "jam" or whatever. Just
because the members of Panic don't have "mad improv jams" doesn't mean that
they are't good musicians. They are simply playing the music that they feel.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but that doesn't mean you should
get off on putting a particular band down. Music is supposed to be a form of
self expression, and I don't think that ANY artist in the "jam band scene"
is trying to impress anyone...
I'd like to thank Daniel from Atlanta, whoever you may be, for saying what so many people who come to this website seem to need to hear. Everyone should listen to what they want and who cares? Also, people need not worry about pop music...POP MUSIC is not bad if it's PRESENTED in the correct format such as Phish can do wonderfully at times. The Beatles made pop music and it's some of the most inspired and amazing music there is. Phish has done songs that could be called pop. Is this a bad thing? NO. It's a bad thing when it's okay for one band to make good pop songs and not for another simply because one may sell more records. Good music is good music. Bouncing Round the Room is a pop song to me, and it's brilliant. Touch of Grey, that was a great pop song too. But each of the songs is presented in a unique way. Pop music does not alway mean commercial. Pop music is bad only when it becomes cliche. Is it not part of the jam scene's ideals to be open-minded about all music, and not so soon to dismiss things based on category?
You know, when I started listening to "jam" music, one of the things that drew me to it the most was that everyone had a different opinion and it didn't matter. I love talking to people who are in different things and hearing a different perspective. I'm tired of reading these letters with people bashing one band or another. I'm incredibly sick and tired of reading people bash Dave Matthews. I personally am not a Dave Matthews fan, but I do respect their abilities as musicians, and isn't other people's right to be a fan? If you don't like it, don't read it. Is that hard to skip an article in a magazine? It took YOU, Eric Berg, longer to write that letter, than it would have to turn the page I bet. The point of music is that we all can develope our own opinions and listen to what makes us happy. What gives anyone the right to put down what others like? It makes me sad to see people make fools of themselves like this and turn their backs on what music really means. And in response to Adam Lander's comment that DMB has a popish hook. Have you been listening to Phish's transitions over their last few albums? If Farmhouse wasn't poppy, I'm not really sure what is.
